    Triple Crown 2016 Thread

Few days out from one of the best sporting events of the year!

I love the Derby and all that goes with it.

It may be impossible to top last year's Triple Crown performance of American Pharoah but each year's a fresh start.

My favorite: Exaggerator, son of Curlin, a Kentucky horse, and winner of the Santa Anita Derby on the road to Churchill.

Didn't Nyqvist already beat Exaggerator? Hard to bet against him. Besides, a friend of mine just bought a piece of a two year old Uncle Mo colt, so I'll be pulling for for the undefeated Nyqvist.

Yup, I believe Exaggerator has 2 losses in his career. Just flat out stopped at a mile a race or two before Santa Anita. Still my pick. Shit, Pharoah lost at Saratoga last year but does anyone remember that?

One of the best days of the year. We are on our 9th annual derby party. Juleps and gambling everywhere.

    And we've got post positions!

Nyquist the favorite at 3-1 and the 13 post.

Exaggerator at 8-1 and starting in the 11 post.

I can hear the trumpet now!

Damn did Exaggerator make one hell of a late charge! Props to Nyquist for a good fast run.

Vonn looked like she's having fun post Tiger.

Horse of the Year may be locked up already in Nyquist.

13th fastest Derby run all time.

I think this horse is sneaky fast.

These horses could have run around the track a second time and Exaggerator would not have caught him. I have read that Nyqvist doesn't wear blinkers, and goes wide, because he likes to see his compassion. He will never let them pass. My feeling is that this year we have a situation similar to Alydar and Affirmed, or even Secretariat and Onion. No matter how many times they race, Exaggerator will always be 2d best

That's crazy if he likes to see the field.

You may be right. Exaggerator was running WFO from so far back I was convinced he'd pass Nyqvist at the line but that horse sensed him coming on fast and put out one hell of a final kick.

Nyquist had such a clean ride. Broke well, sat behind the pace just outside of his dirt spray and just cruised the whole time. That was a real in-command horse. Certainly looks like he has the stuff to pull of the TC ...

Beyer Speed Figure of 103 is good, not great. Wonder if he has more in him given that he wasn't seriously pushed. (Though big red wasn't pushed in '73 at the Belmont and earned a 139)

A while back i was having dinner with a client who as a hobby owns race horses. he has a full time manager to raise train and owns a horse farm in Virginia. yes, he's loaded.

I know diddly about horses, racing etc but he mentioned Nyquist as his favorite for the derby. I forgot all about it until I read the results yesterday.

Looks like not many Derby also-rans will be making the trip to the Preakness. Shame, there's some good horses in there in an otherwise top-heavy year.

Brutal stat of the day: Exaggerator's jock has finished 2nd to Nyquist on 6 occasions. Get rid of that dude!

This has to be the quietest lead up to the Preakness that I can remember.

We have an undefeated horse coming in. Guaranteed rain and slop which supposedly favors Exaggerator and an upset. Only 11 horses though.

Triple crown hangover from last year perhaps?

I recorded the Derby, watched what I thought was the Derby, then deleted it. But it seemed odd that they were on grass...then there was a cool crash, (crashes are why we are so fascinated by racing).
What the hell did I watch? Must have been some lower level race earlier in the day on the infield smaller track?

There's 3 (IIRC) turf races at Churchill the day of the Derby. Usually the only one that makes the national tv coverage is the Woodford Turf Classic which goes off right before or two races before the Derby.

How's the weather today in MD?

Crazy betting action going on this morning.

Someone placed $80,000 on Stradivari making the horse a temporary favorite.

Sloppy track, I'm going Exaggerator again. He won Santa Anita in the slop.

    Drugs are bad, m'kay.

The 141st Preakness Stakes got off on a sore note to start the day. Two horses in the first four races died on Saturday, including the first race winner.
Homeboykris, a 9-year-old colt, died shortly after coming from behind to win and hold off Golden Rings in the opening race of the day. The cause of death is unknown for the Maryland-based horse, who won as a 9-1 underdog.
Homeboykris collapsed shortly after reaching the winner's circle and died.
