    Exclamation Slide at Abasin

DENVER (CBS4) Summit County Search and Rescue is working an avalanche in a closed off section of the Arapahoe Basin ski area.

The avalanche occurred near a well known run called Pallavacini. One person, a snowboarder, is confirmed buried in the slide and others could be stuck as well.

One skier on a lift near the slide said snow chunks as "big as houses" could be seen in several places.

According to the Arapahoe Basin ski patrol, the avalanche happened about 11:35 a.m.

Rescue workers are using snowshoes, skis and snowmobiles to search the area

Near Palli, Fingers maybe? Hope everyone is ok, post up any more info...

Can you see the Fingers from the Pali lift? Inbounds maybe?

Snowboarder Missing In Avalanche Near A-Basin
    POSTED: 12:02 pm MDT May 20, 2005
    UPDATED: 12:08 pm MDT May 20, 2005
One person was reportedly missing after an avalanche near Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Summit County Friday.
The slide was reported at about 11:30 a.m., and Summit County Search and Rescue volunteers were dispatched to the location.
Witnesses said the missing person was snowboarding when the avalanche occurred.

The avalanche was in an area that was closed to snowboarding and skiing.

    Emphasis mine:

only closed runs per the websight are: 5th alley (gauthier), Y chutes, tree chutes.

Sounds more like the steep gullies?

FRISCO, Colo. (AP) - One person is dead in a huge avalanche at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, and Search and Rescue crews are probing for more victims.
Summit County authorities say workers tried to revive the man for about a half-hour before pronouncing him dead on the mountain.

Undersheriff Derek Woodman says the slide was about 1,000-feet wide, and roughly 800-feet down.

The avalanche was contained to the top of A-Basin's Pallavicini run, which was reportedly closed at the time of the slide.

Did the cornice drop? This sounds odd to me. There's so much compaction up there.

Wow, this is insane, thoughts and prayers go out to all involved. Maybe the warm temperatures saturated the snowpack with water, that can cause massive avalanches right around this time of year.

R.I.P. to the snowboarder and condolences to his friends and family.

It does go to show you that Patrol does close runs for a reason.

    Unhappy

    Someone died -- ugh.

I'm sure we'll get some details from CAIC and/or Summit sooner or later.

Damn! Looks like it was on the main Palli run. Probably the upper face where there's usually a decent sized cornice (skier's left off the lift). Sad. Thoughts out to the victim and family.
