Maybe this is too obvious, but an easy thing to check: if your linkage is marginal/loose or the cable is a little low on tension you should be able to detect a difference by manually holding the selector all the way to the end of its travel to see if that changes the behavior at all. The distance between the detent position for 1st and the hard stop may still be enough if it's just got a little too much play.

So I've pretty much come to the conclusion that everything used between about $2500 and $15k is just varying degrees of nice that will either crap out, be a hassle or be more expensive to keep running then you want it to be. I think what it comes down to is what your pain threshold is.

Have you added up the total money spent on your LR and compared that to the cost of something nicer upfront?
