That is a pretty good deal. Your friend might want to consider advertising in ih8mud.com and some of the nationwide car sale sites. People shopping for land cruisers often seem willing for a fly and drive.

My 100-series land cruiser is a 1999. It has none of the issues mentioned by reverend floater because their systems are different.

Floater, have you had the ignition cylinder thing break on you yet or was it already replaced on yours? That was a rad experience for me (glad I could walk home, leave the truck overnight, and work on it where it was parked).

I do my best to class it up with car parts, beat up Jon boats and the plow truck, which is a real thing of beauty. Wife is not super stoked on my program but has given up trying to contain my "hoarding."

No. Sounds awesome though. And I agree on ih8mud. You'll find a buyer there for sure.

Conundrum has the nastiest 80 Series I've ever seen, aka Gary.

It seems like a time bomb. You don't want this happening while away unless you have a kit for dealing. It seems that some peeps proactively replace with the more robust part.

My brother just did a river trip in southern Idaho, and the road in to the take out apparently was GNARLY, and both of the arranged shuttle vehicles are built 80 series cruisers with 33s and lockers, and sliders.

Fucking Toyotas. You can hardly go wrong if anyone has done basic maintenance. I pulled the Sequoia into an SF city park dirt lot the other day. A drainage ditch that I was parked across, then about a foot of steep pavement to get back onto the road. The tires started spinning on the Sequoia. I realized that, with some driving technique, I could get out of this without 4wd. But the FZJ80 would have crawled out of that without the faintest slip, and I've gotten used to that. A shame I don't need that level of off-road in the city, and almost never get out far enough to actually need it. But damn, it sure was nice. Really put the gas mileage into perspective.

...or no maintenance. An old friend had a second gen 4runner that we drove up and down the shitty road to baker in all kinds of weather for years (on top of it being his dd). Saw many "awd" SUVs and ford/chevy 4x4 pickups go off the side or into the bank, yet the runner never lost its composure.

Being a 3.0, it eventually lost a head gasket and started to drink water. My friend being a licensed mechanic, decided to do what most mechs do with their own cars: ignore it. After a while it hydrolocked, and bent a con rod. Toyota did both gaskets on their dime, and the main bearings for a reduced rate. Aside from a faint knock, she's good to go. I asked my friend if he was going to sell it, and his reply was, "meh, I'll just drive it until it dies". To which I replied, "so forever".

Fast forward a few years, and someone steals it to do some B&Es, or wheelin', or some such shit. They abandon it, and a homeless guy moves in. My friend is hoping for a check form the insurance company, but the cops actually find it, so he gets it back. Again, I ask if he's going to sell it. "Well, the insurance paid for a new interior, so I'm just going to drive it into the ground". More years go by, and he finally decides that he wants a nice 'grown-up' car, so he trades it in - and the dealer actually takes it. And sells it!

I'm positive some dirtbag somewhere is still driving that thing with 300+ on the clock.

I said can hardly because someone will show up with a 300k Corolla that blew up with "regular oil changes".
"Yo!! Brentley! Ya wanna get faded before work?"

There is a very nicely built 80 in my area, that looks brand new exterior-wise. It has 33+, sliders, bumpers, big rack, belly plates, wrap around steel tubing connecting bumpers to sliders, etc. it never looks dirty and looks completely unscratched. I wonder if it'll ever see dirt (or gravel).

Man that looks sharp in that pic.

Less so in some of the others, no offense.

I get it though. If I had a donor car and unlimited cash I'd recreate my purely stock 95 SE-V6 Pathfinder. One day...

The depreciation on MBs is insane. True for many luxury cars but MB seem hit especially hard.
