Of course I want to spend more than that on tires and shocks and if I do that I'm going to want to go to a junkyard and get the fender and doors that need to be replaced but there's that rabbit hole I don't want to go down. Chances are I'll just drive it into the ground or trade it towards something else cheap.
Good strategy but beware of death by a thousand cuts. My Dakota included numerous separate non maintenance repairs $200 - $300 fixes: (DIY) ex. ball joints, AC pulley, caliper and brake lines, ignition key lock set, body control module, O2 sensors. Plus some cheap ones like: passenger air bag light, evap hoses, radiator cap etc.

But I guess I must like the thing either that or I'm just a stubborn bastid.

My 9' 2 post lift looks like its $250.00 more than that quik jack bl-5000. $1600.00 delivered and a couple of hours install. If you have 9.5' ceiling and don't need portable use it seems a better option.

That's right, the hydraulics are used to raise and lower only. There is a mechanical safety lock that takes the vehicle weight once raised.

Totally but in my case portability is key.

Buy a reman and try to swap it myself this summer - $1000

Buy a kit and try to rebuilt it myself - $500 (+$1300 for the local guy to install a reman when I fuck it up?)

Take the tahoe and sx4 down to the Toyota dealer and trade them both in on a 4R or LC for my wife to drive on the regular

Was just driving the tahoe around today, and it's generally in pretty good shape... There's a little shimmy starting in OD around 45 mph, and the t-case sounds pretty fucked up... But the tranny shifts super smooth, doesn't hunt, etc... Engine runs so smooth... Tracks straight, brakes are good, super comfy, bucket seats front and back. I only have about $5k tied up in it, so I'm a little torn about whether a $1k investment is worthwhile... 255k miles. If I were to pull the trigger on the repair, I might also thrown on a 3"-4" lift and swap on some bigger tires when I replace the current ones. So, maybe another $3k? But then I'd pretty much have to fix the tranny whenever it goes... And the sx4 is in great shape. Just put $700 into a 100k mile refresh (all the fluids, brakes, rear diff seals), and it's been bullet proof. I dunno.

    What would you do?

    Edit: ^ sick Z.
Buy a reman and install yourself. If doing the overhaul yourself was a real possibility then the R&R is no biggie. And hell, bust it open and take a peek - if it's just a stretched chain it's an easy overhaul. If there is glitter everywhere, do the reman unit. Donate the saved cash to private lift load/unload lessons for Benny (not because you like him, but because the IRS won't question the tax write off for helping the mentally ill)

Thanks for the advice. Metal shavings are already confirmed. It's dead, it just doesn't know it yet. I'm considering the route you suggest... Seems plausible. Plus, a friend is a full on Tahoe nut, and he says he'd be up for helping. He claims he can go from full to refilled on a front diff swap in <45mins. Trying to find one local, so I can see it before it's $400 in shipping to reject it. But so far, no outrageous deals have come up... We'll see if the current one survives the winter. In a pinch, it'll end up in Georgetown getting replaced.

So I presume I could request a seller to do an emission test whether it was due or not, but would it just mean that it would pass when I went in, or absolve me of the obligation for title transfer within x days?

You can ask for anything up to and including a reach around depends on whether the seller is inclined to accommodate you.

Failing an emissions or safety inspection might be grounds for voiding the sale of a vehicle in certain states. Especially if the seller is a licensed dealer and the vehicle isn't a $500 beater that was listed as for parts only on the bill of sale. Again this sort of thing is very state specific. Best to check the DMV regs in your state.

Like the delete and silver trim updates.

    What's up with the seats?

In related news. Took the cover off the 996 this last weekend after a winter in the garage and find out no one disconnected the battery. Now I can't even pop the manual frunk lid because the dead central locking system had everything locked shut until I can get power to it somehow.

Called the local Porsche dealer and the jabroni on the other end told me to jam a screwdriver connected to a positive line from a jump-it or another car into the C-2 fuse slot and then I should be able to hit the button on the key and it'll open up allowing me to jump it.

Yeah, that just doesn't seem right. In my experience I'm either gonna fry the entire fuse box or myself doing this.

I mean, it's a fucking manual lever to pop the frunk and some genius in Stuttgart thought it would be a good idea to have it somehow locked shut if you lose all power - therefore keeping you from accessing the battery and getting it back up and running?!?!

There has to be a better way, anyone know of one before I dive into pages and pages on rennlist?

GL with the jump start, those instructions are wild. Report back after you get your daily triple in.
I think it was just the shade and that I was looking at them on my iPhone.
They looked like a 2 tone I'd never seen before.

Waiting on jumper cables to arrive. I'm already pissed at some kraut that this is even an issue.

Nothin worse than a rattling dash after 10 years.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

I am amazed how much those 964's went up in price over the last few years. I should have bought a really nice example of one about 4-5 years ago that I let get away for about $20k. What a dope.

If you're in the market for a clean Carrera 4 with a recently-rebuilt engine, it's worth a look.

Why don't people take the extra 2 seconds to post a few more pics of the car they're trying to sell? I'd love to see what that diesel rig looks like up close but I'm not so committed that I'm going to email the guy to get that info.
