    I would say Aptos. Near Santa Cruz, but not as busy. Although, you still have a four hour drive to Tahoe. Carmel or Carmel Vallley wouldn't be so bad either. All that is a bit spendy, but well worth it.
    My girlfriend and I just got off the phone trying to figure out where we are headed come Septemeber. Checking out a few places like Nelson, BC, Jackson and maybe stay in New Hampshire for a while (I am reading "A Walk In The Woods", and it is sounding rather nice).

    A bit spendy? WTF? Those are some of the least affordable areas in the entire country. And unless your idea of fun is hanging out with nearly deads and playing golf there's nothing to do.

    Valparaiso, Chile is way, way cool. Cerro Allegre kicks ass. More like 3-4 hrs to the mountain though. Vina's Chile's Atlantic City.

    Milan, Italy.
    genova and portofino (I mean, the sea) = 2 h driving
    Alagna, Gressoney, monte Rosa = 2 h driving
    Chamonix = 2 h driving
    Verbier = 3 h driving
    Dolomiti = 3.5 h driving

    People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

    bay area rules. i have lived in boulder, crested butte, chicago (grew up there), london, tokyo, SF, and now Mill Valley (right across the GG Bridge, and out of reach of the fog).

    if you want/need to have a professional job, then bay area is it. as long as your schedule is flexable and you don't have to commute with the masses of 9-5'ers, than getting away to Tahoe is a breeze. ocean/beaches at your door step, as wella s awesoem road riding, mountain biking, surfing, kite boarding, windsurfing, hiking, etc etc etc. SF is a one of the greatest cities anywhere. Yosemite, Napa/Sonoma, Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Shasta, etc all within close range. great yr around weather, etc.

    Only downside is cost of housing. But if you plan to initially rent, its comparable to Chicago...

    I've got a few good friends in mill valley, get down there a few times a year to visit and kiteboard--love that place, great vibe. Did you catch that local comedy they were doing there recently? I caught dana carvey and some other good comics for like $10.
