    Location, location, location....

best place to reap the benefits of the beach and the mountain lifestyles? Living on the water ranks above ski in ski out...3-6 hour drive is no big deal for turns. Cali mags holla at me!

Alameda. Sunshine all the time. 30 minutes from San Fran and less than 3 hours from Tahoe! It is a sweet spot for the Bay Area.

Whereever you end up. Surf is sweet, snow is awesome, mt biking kicks ass. So much to do cool stuff to do and I have a law school final in two days.

I like the man-whores in the Loin'...and record stores to buy the 80's pop songs they enjoy

but yeah, I don't mind driving either, especially to some 180 bpm tunes at ridiculously high levels driving to some gnar at least 9 months of the year.

ALL music needs to be listened to at ridiculously high levels while driving.

At least, all good music. That's for another topic, though.

Dude...no joking. The gf wants out of the country. Costa Rica winters with NZ summers.....hmmmmmmmmm Though Las Lenas makes more sense.

Are there any complications with Americans owning buisnesses in Costa Rica?

Told you. Check out the west coast if you get a chance, it's even sweeter. You can be on the beach while scoping out lines on the alps. That and I'm pretty sure the biting sand fly is just a myth to keep people away.

edit: looks like my pictures from a secret west coast beach have evaporated. Anyone know if backpack's old site is still up and running?

I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

It's a sweet location for sure. Not much of a secret anymore though. Everyone who's been there wants to move there (every backpacker I met in patagonia was trying to get a job downunder) There's really no professional employment on the SI though, so if you ever want to make money get in the tourist industry now, or start off with a bunch.

Oregon beaches are cold, but cheaper and niceer than Cali.
Santa Cruz (expensive, losing some of the beachtown feel)
Ventura (my home come next w/e)
Sydney - NZ is a 2 hr flight away.

Don't know too much about this, but the Riviera in France/Italy up to Chamonix or countless other resorts seems to be doable in 3-4 hours as well. Probably expensive, but great beaches and mountains.

The GF is coming around, wants to take 2 week trip in august to see what's out there. I'm trying to move that date up so we can keep this fire stoked.

New Hampshires not bad no income tax. Little cold on the beach sometimes but not bad. Living on the water is a bit spendy (Rye, Hampton area)but its a straight shot to Boston and only .5-4 hours depending on what you want to ski/ride. Bummer is that the surfing is best when the water is super cold (winter) nor' estas(sp?) are the best for both surfing and skiing. Mts are not long adn not a ton of snow.
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

After five years it is. Anyway, you might have heard of a city named San Francisco. It is cheap, clean, and mellow.

    Cheap compared to what, Aspen?

SF makes alot of sense, but I'm not sure it's warm enough for the lady.

Trust me, after 7 years in Chicago being able to drive to ski will be a welcome change.

Google Vina del Mar/Valparaiso, Chile. Totally modern and fun city, better weather than the Bay area, best empanadas in the world, surfing out the back door, 2-3 hours to a ton of great terrain in winter, and Pichilemu less than 2 hours south (ask DudeLe about the surf). Chile just signed a FTA w/the U.S. meaning that a lot of restrictions for gringos are being lifted

I’m sorry. I can’t sit down at a computer without being overcome with sarcasm. Anyway, the East Bay is warmer and cheaper than the city (and a 30-45 minutes closer to the mountains). Once you’re past Oakland it is hot hot hot. If you search the TGR archives you can find endless banter on which block in the city has the best coffee and most foxes per square foot.

There's great skiing in the Alpes Maritimes, a mere hour north of Monaco/Monte Carlo. Another suggestion would be Marbella in Spain, with skiing at Sol y Nieve less than 2 hrs away.

    Start saving, dood.

I will nominate Manhattan Beach. Surfing all year round. The south bay lifestyle is awesome. Easy five hours to Mammoth which has one of the longest seasons in the country. LA has alot of diverse options for entertainment. You can get to Hollywood or downtown if you want to go to a game, concert or some crappy club. Close to LAX so it is easy to jump to just about any city int he world in one hop. I think the critical thing is try to work near your home. If I had to commute on the 405 or 10, I would not be living here.
