I have been able to only catch small bits and pieces of this. Mind blown! What a venue! Super stoked the conditions came in so strong for this. Sick lines and painful looking crashes.

Only having watched a bit, I'm unsure of how the waves usually break there?

Is it a straight line to safety contest on the biggest waves? I saw a post above about a barrel but from the 30 mins or so I watched it looked like the waves that were ridden were all basically "get me the hell out of here" type rides.

    Pretty impressive nonetheless.
I still call it The Jake.

^^^yes. It is typically a big drop waves to run out. It can wall, and occasionally will set up toward the "inside". What makes it special is it was the first in the realm of XXL to be ridden, and is quite paddle able So lends its led to the old school style.

Fak!!! I remember when he was like a spansered 7 year old grom. Jeezuz I am old. Congrats for killing it JJ
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Graduated HS with Greg Long, was hoping he would do a little better. I do love that JJ won though.

That was fascinating to watch. Missed a few heats, but caught most of it, and of course they replayed all the best waves anyway. Amazing how many and how big good waves there were. What a sustained swell.

Kind of cool that Slater went out on a "short board* with the intention of barreling in honor of Little, great tribute. You could see in the interview how much it meant to him...well.played sir, well played.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Exactly. It was not mentioned until after the heat was over that Slater wanted to salute his friend more than try to win a contest. I know people hate on Slater but he is the real deal to me..... Mad respect for him.

Nobody hates on Slater. Every surfer in the world knows he's the best. If not one of the greatest athletes ever. The man is super human.

That opinion comes from me posting a Slater barrel at the HB Open I took a few years ago on this site.
Had a few peeps chime in to that affect.
He is the real deal and haters gotta hate.
That being said I am really looking forward to watching John John this season. He has "it" also

Just a great event. True hellmen with balls of steel. I love all the history and emotion involved. Another thing that makes Waimea special is that its a warm water wave accessed from a public park next to a major road an hour from an international airport. It truly is a magical spot.

The only thing that would have made it better is if it was connecting to the shore#

That was pretty fucking special. Tons of good surfing and wipeouts. Slater's barrel for Brock, Clyde at 66, and an almost 50 guy in first until JJs last ride. Screens don't really do those waves justice.

No shit, in real life my ass would be so puckered looking at those waves. No way would I have the balls to paddle out there/then.

Props to Clyde out there at 66. And not just out there catching a few lesser 20 foot waves, but hucking his meat on 30 footers just like the kids. Some of those kids parents weren't even born when he started surfing.

He had the highest scoring wave of the contest too, a 96.
