The EDDIE is a GO - today

If you got time to kill, tune in to the Eddie Aikau surf comp in Hawaii. Only goes when the face height of the waves is 40ft or greater. Last run in 2009. Supposed to start at 12:30 ET.

    http://www.worldsurfleague.com/events/2015/spec/1182/quiksilver-in-memory-of-eddie-aikau/live

ETA: I know there is a surf forum, but thought the Padded Room dwellers might want to tune in.

So how's it work when they set the Eddie for today and Mavs on Friday? A bunch of the guys on the list for the Eddie are the same usual suspects who're at the top of the game at Mavericks. 48 hours seems like a gnarly short time between the events. Gotta be totally exhausting and makes me think guys who try both are at higher risk of something bad happening on Friday...

(Not trying to be a buzzkill, just wondering if I'm missing something. I'm a very rare, P/T surfer.

I'm pretty sure the big boys just jet around and chase the swell. There are plenty of stories of guys surfing the North Shore then getting Mavs a day or so later. That's their life.

I saw today a bunch of the guys that were slated to surf the Eddie flew over to Maui to surf big Jaws, then their jetting over to N. Cal for Mavs contest. Gonna be some tired big wave riders.

Hopefully it looks just like this again.

Wow. How many died making the video? Jesus.

So, just to clear things up for you landlocked or small wave surfers - big wave surfing is not that tiring.

Yea, there can be a long paddle out. But you don't duck dive. And your board is nearly ten feet. So it glides. You also don't get a shit ton of waves like your Rog enjoying waist high eight second period slop. You sit and wait, move into position and take only the best that come to you. Catching the wave is not an sprint paddle, but instead a steady, slow, strong paddle.

So, at the end of the day, not that much of a workout for a pro big wave surfer. Have the Eddie today, the the Mavs tomorrow leaves plenty of time for a stop at Jaws [emoji16].

They biggest fatigue issue will be the flight and dealing with the SFO shit show.

Well of course it is. It is winter big waves season. I was referring to the summer time stuff.

I guess another point to make is that contest surfing is pretty low on the exercise scale. Get three waves in your heat, go to the beach and rest. Go out again for 45 minutes after a few hours rest. Winners do surf more heats, but usually it is a three to five round contest at this size.

Also want to note two more things.

The Eddie is one of the coolest co test out there if for no other reason than they are willingness to wait for the right day, even if it never comes.

And the video is of Mavs in a Eddie thread. [emoji45]. Have some respect.
