In keeping with the long standing tradition....

of injuring oneself and immediately posting about it here, I am making this post.

Just got back from the emergency room, where I was the proud recipient of 6 stitches in my shin thanks to a fun encounter with my chainring. Actually a close encounter with a tree caused the second and more injurious accident. I nailed a tree at the top of a steep downhill section and managed to damage my brakes.

I regain my composure, ragecall the offending tree, and continue on my way down. As I approach a nasty technical section of trail with deep ruts and one very large crater, I grab a double handfull of brake only to find that I have no brakes. My front wheel dives into the crater and I take flight over the bars. I'm thinking "so far so good, so far so good" until my bike piles into me and my shin does battle with my big chainring. The chainring won. The cool thing (I guess) is that I got to see my shin bone - and it is, in fact, connected to my leg bone.

ADD version of the story: I wrecked. I got an owie on my shin. I got stitches and fucked up brakes.

    Pics as requested:

    and a close up:

It really wasn't all that bad a wound, all except for the seeing my shin bone part. At least it was a straight, relatively clean cut.

Yep. I hit a tree earlier on in the trail, which rendered my brakes useless. I didn't realize they weren't working untill I bombed down that steep section of trail right after Lake Fairfax Park (headed back towards Reston). I grabbed a double handfull of brake and didn't slow. wheel found one of those foot deep ruts and I was up up and away.

To my bikes credit, the chainring tried to stop my flight.
