    Trucks.

Did I mention my $23k truck is a lariat with all the ball tickling seat A/C etc? It all still works. At 180k miles, literally all the “fancy” stuff works like new. The interior is flawless, even the leather seats look new. The exterior has zero rust or flaws either.

So I’m probably going to be in the truck $38k all in, still less than half of a new lariat or platinum or something. If I get another 200k mikes out of the truck, I’d say I’m money ahead.

And when the truck is running, it’s an incredible machine… I get 21mpg on the freeway unloaded and 17mpg pulling my boat, all the power I could ever want, and of course very cool sounds from under the hood.

I can’t say that about some of the Toyotas I’ve owned honestly… how many 80 series Land Cruisers have seats that won’t move back and forth, or have a side mirror that gives you a migraine from how bad they shake? And how many Toyotas are somehow hopelessly gutless but also get < 15mpg? (Looking at you, 4.7 v8.)

I am interested to see how the 7.3 Godzilla gas motor ends up holding up. The 6.2 gas motor has always been an unimpressive motor to me, although it’s probably a pretty solid engine considering it’s in basically every U-Haul truck. The 7.3 seems like a viable diesel alternative.

Sounds like you got a plan and it's working out. If by unimpressive you mean not that fast or powerful but generally reliable, I'd agree. I know plenty of 7.3 fleet trucks over 150k that seem like they are doing well. Detuned motors last longer. Toyotas, snowmobiles, CATs, its all the same. A Raptor and an F250XL both have the 6.2,

I don’t know if I have a plan, more like a plan happened to me and I’m just going with it and working to rationalize the decisions made.

Prior to buying the truck I was looking for a 6.2 F250 but I couldn’t find one that wasn’t either a work truck interior, a Canadian oilfield truck with rust or that wasn’t driven hard and put away wet.

Funny enough, the 6.2 generation of Raptor, even if someone supercharges it, is extremely reliable. Anytime a motor starts ending up in boats it’s generally a sign it’s highly reliable, and the 6.2 is actually used in a lot of wake boats and jet boats.

Can’t say that about the 3.5 ecoboost, especially the raptors… seems to be a 150k mile throw away motor.

Wish I could find a raptor or tundra that didn’t have the soccer mom bed length. I want a new 1/2 ton tundra hybrid, but they don’t even make that in single or double cab yet.

Re: The mention of the landcruiser issues above...
Both of those issues are annoying, but cost less than $80 + 1 hr of time to DIY fix.

Very different than a CP4 injection pump shrapnel grenade taking out your entire fuel system. I was surprised to hear Ford used that same shit pump, I was only aware of it on the Duramax as that is what I was shopping for and steered away from for the CP 4 years.

Unfortunately with the machining debris debacle Toyota shit the bed on its reliability reputation, but at least they are stepping up and owning it.

All diesel trucks from the mid-10s have CP4s. Ram and Chevy have stopped using it, but Ford still uses.

    How wet is wet ?

Junior bought a truck off this head mechanic from a Dodge dealer over in Alberta who would buy these trucks at auction, mechanic said they always made money on trucks. Junior's truck needed the engine rebuilt cuz the oil field guys had put the in wrong airfilter which the Cummins aspirated. Engine was actualy good after the rebuild,

same mechanic had another one he was working on that had spent a month submerged ... thats wet eh

Raptors were only made with 5.5' beds, right?

(I'm 99% sure about any 15-20 varieties, not so sure about other generations)

Isn’t the Tremor line for people who want a Raptor but also want to pretend to do truck stuff?

I think you could get them as a supercab with a 6.5’ bed in the gen1 and gen2

Its your money, do what you wish. But the, "gotta have a nice truck" crowd spends theirs differently than I do. I know too many bros with the $80k plus truck that are asking when the check is coming becasuse "its a little tight this month".
Can confirm. Picked up a 2017 Chev 2500 former work truck that’s actually loaded for $12k. Spent some time cleaning it up, works fantastic.

I’ve had multiple raptors and no payment on trucks was smartest thing I did when I bought my last raptor. Dumbest thing was selling in post covid but whatever lol.

Where are you buying used trucks these days? I live in bumblefuck Colorado, no dealerships around. Lots of website trucks on shady dealer lots. Looking at something like a 2016-18 Tundra 1794 for $30k.

I'd rather cut my testicles off than deal with a dealer - I almost exclusively get them through auctions. The last one came from Ritchie Brothers.

Yes, lots of dealers but limited used inventory and I'm not in the new truck bracket yet.

Friend of mine hired a broker to find him a new used truck. Guy found exactly what he wanted for a good price and had it shipped from like ohio or something. All for less than it would have been here.

Don’t remember, just know he came out ahead in the end. Nice thing is not having to deal with the details and just signing on the dotted line.

Most brokers claim, I think, not to charge anything, they get their cut on the other side.
