Wtf is on that front end? Turbos? That thing would suck in the snow with that wheel/tire combo.

Are KBB amounts for Toyota trucks kinda low in the mountain west? I see some private party listings for Tacomas and Tundras that seem really high. Are people still selling for those crazy prices in 2024? It's not 2020/2021 anymore.
I've thought of doing a trade in just for the ease of transition. I don't really want to spend a long time selling my truck privately and then maybe being truckless for too long while I look for the replacement. I know you get smoked on a trade in value, but how bad really. A few grand or 7 grand like private listings makes it seem.
I bought my Taco in 20 and sold in 23 for about the same price w/ 50k on the odometer. Had a local guy w/ a dealer's license sell it for me and he charged me $1500 to sell it. I'm busy and don't want to deal with haggling and all that shit. I felt like it was worth it. He sold it to a dealer in Cheyenne.
I proceeded to buy a '09 Tundra and a 01' Sequoia for $13K less than I sold the Taco for. So it worked out for me.
I think you are looking at least a 5k hit for a trade in value vs private party.

Imagine this crazy world where you could pickup a phone and call a dealership and ask them the trade in value.

I really like the look of the 2500 AT4 Sierras. If I plan to have this truck for a while and a bigger camper is definitely in the future it does kinda make sense to get a duramax.

Yes I realize there is a massive difference, but the GF now has the Q5 we can drive around town most of the time so I already haven't been driving my truck as much. The GFC is already too small for us. Hopefully mini WRG in the next year or two. Plus the dogs. We will need a bigger camper soon.
The conundrum that it looks like many fall into on the RV thread is that they all wish they went to a 2500+ sooner than later. Slide ins on a 1500 only really work if they are the super light ones.
I need to just go test drive several trucks. If I really like now the new Tundras drive it will be hard for me to stray. I have had a Chevy in the past and the drive and interior were meh, but that was a 2008 Silverado.
Work is great, but I'm not in the "I can just swap to a new truck every couple years" zone like it seems so many are. I will probably have whatever new truck I get for another 7-10 years.
Anything more than a GFC you are going to want the 2500+.
On the plus side, you'll probably get good coin for that GFC selling separately in Bozeman.

3% on say a 30k trade is only 900 bones. No dealer is operating on that small of a spread. That said, they typically negotiate either on trade or the price of the truck, so they can make it up on the price of whatever you are buying and give you a rock solid trade allowance to get the deal done. Most used cars you are looking at about 5k between what they are going to offer you in trade, and what they then go and list it for (assuming its not some pile they just send to auction and you beat them up on the price of your new vehicle). That number changes depending on the overall value of the vehicle, and is going to be smaller for a 10k car and larger for a 60k car. I don't know the exact details of WRG's Tundra but its the Rockies so I assume its worth a decent chunk of change since all Toyota trucks get a premium in those parts.
I personally think trading a car in is the better play. Sure you could fuck around with potential buyers but that is huge time suck IMO, let alone the frustration.

Unless towing regularly or hauling heavy stuff regularly, I don't think I'd want any modern diesel. None of them seem reliable - and repairs can be extremely expensive.
21 mpg diesel vs 14 mpg gas sounds pretty good, except for the up front $8K purchase price, the more expensive fuel and oil changes, and the fun of unexpected $$$$$ repairs that may or may not crop up.
YMMV.
KBB says my tundra is an 11k trade in value. It's got almost 215k miles on it now. 2012 Rock Warrior. Paint is pretty beat (it's black), interior is fine just needs cleaning, some wheel well plastic fender material is missing, needs a new windshield. Mechanically totally sound. I can get it detailed for $700. Not sure if that's even worth doing before a trade in or not. Does the dealer really care? They would detail it anyway and I'm sure they just plug numbers in and give me a price. I don't think I will really recoup that $700. Not sure.
They don't. Don't do anything more than run it through the car wash and maybe a quick shop vac.
