I don't think you know which Suby I'm driving now
Nope no turbo. Small displacement, burns pretty clean and makes acceptable power. High compression is not a replacement for displacement (nothing is) but historically has been another way to squeeze performance out of an otherwise pedestrian motor. You want proof? Look at my fuelly stats and find the tank that was ~5mpg lower than all of the others this past summer. It's not about performance the engine ran like shit, jerky acceleration and it ran hot with the occasional "burp" at highway speeds, all things it has never done running on 93. The only other times the mpg was close to that low was with a couple of bikes hanging off the outside on long trips or when it was snowy and I purposely used more fuel in the name of fun.

As some who travels frequently, this enrages me. These people need to be culled from the heard. How hard is to read on TSA's website about what is ok to fly with and what is banned. Further, how have people not figured out what needs to be removed when flying?
Don't get me started about the idiots with their hot coffee and three bags, trying to board the plane.
These people need a high five. To the face. With a chair.
Paper checks are the most insecure way to pay. And filling out the fucking ledger? Give me a fucking break. You can check that at home, online.
No, obviously not, but I'm suggesting that the idea that all of our engines are or will soon be running right at the edge of knocking (or really close to the edge of anything else in the way F1 engines do) is not relevant to whether or not GL's Suby will run OK on 87 octane.
It's also clearly wrong to imply that this is just some random opinion Click and Clack have (had), when all sorts of industry tech data suggests the same.

I disagree. When you have three people trying to take up a quad do you ask before joining? How about an 8 person gondy with two or three people in it? I don't agree with the whole bro/brah entitlement thing.
If there's no line none of this applies (to me it's only an issue on crowded days--otherwise I'd rather ride separately myself).

When it's crowded and I see an opening, I have no qualms about "asking" if I can join as I am doing so. We can all get along for a few minutes.
Isn't there a thread for this already? Shit that annoys you?
I see hydraulic turtles.
What you quoted says that running regular in a car designed for premium won't automatically damage the engine. It says nothing at all about any other effect the lower octane fuel might have on performance and mileage.
If the engine has to retard timing (and in the case of a turbo, reduce boost) to avoid knock then the engine is not running as efficiently as it was designed to. This can most definitely affect emissions and power output, and lower power output for a given amount of fuel burned, depending on where it shows up in the RPM range would definitely lead to decreased mileage.
Also - the engine has to actually start knocking (detonating) before the computer can sense it and make adjustments. In some engines even small amounts of detonation break things - see the damaged piston posted above. Some cars, like Subarus turbos, definitely do run on the ragged edge of detonation.
So you can stick with your misinterpretation of what some yahoo mechanics with a radio show have to say, and I'll stick with the idea that if I can't stomach an extra $4/tank of gas I'll just buy a car that doesn't require it. Tell me, why would the manufacturer recommend high octane if it wasn't necessary? They getting kickbacks from the oil companies?
TGR forums cannot handle SkiCougar !
Did you see this? I'd love to see this become more prevalent.

There was a long and very amusing thread way back when about them where allegations of affecting MPG and of being dangerous for motorcycles were slung about.
Edit: found it
Equally as important is the dorks who keep their fog lights on all the time. What about the people that change the bulbs to ones bright enough to be headlights?
Unfortunately my car has extremely annoying drl's so I usually keep my running lights on because it kicks the drl's off and it turns on the really cool boomerangs (sometime called halos or angel eyes) and the tails for added rear vis.
My approach is to just go in or get on if there is an opening (busy day). The "asking" is just pretending that I care what their answer is.![]()

Dex would, but not sure about Teej.
What ever happened with that guy? He just faded into the ether. I know he was sick, did the cancer finally get him?
