    With this freedom comes responsibility

Does anyone think the proliferation of these pretty videos, with their solemn platitudes actually do anything except sell Black Diamond gear?

I don't know but if I read the word "Mission" one more time used as a way to describe a day of skiing I will vomit.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

i guess that depends on the mission
sorry but imo if your mission is to go out and video yourselves creating large repeating slide paths in well travel areas thus encouragin others to emulate that questionable practice
well it sure seems kinda hypocritical to preach about personal responsibility

There is possibly some argument to be made that making avy forecasting "cool" to the totally uninformed masses is a good or at least better thing than pure ignorance, but it's definitely hard to see these things as much more than slick commercials.

Guilty pleasure for me, I love the vids with local mountains. UAC guys do a great job imo, and BD has always treated me well on product. Dont see the ads anywhere but here and facefuck tho.

I've nothing against BD, nor them selling their products with entertaining little videos, but when they're making such big claims: "a message that will change the way you think about skiing in the backcountry this winter" they invite being evaluated for effectiveness, and IMO this effort comes up short.

Avie forcasters probably should set good examples in any and all videos they are in, like always skiing with a partner.

But I like the video, and of course it's a BD ad.

I think you are confused. This is about showing good practices to noobs, creating an illusion for the camera, whether the cameraman is a partner or not doesn't matter. In reality I'm pretty sure the guy was being safe by himself, I don't question his judgement skiing by himself.

    ^ this.

I blame blister gear for the proliferation of it useage...

"these poles are ideal for all day backcountry missions with less than 17.85 foot drops but are too yellow for aggresive in-bounds charging days when you'll want to stick to the redder ones (but obviously after carrying out some minor strap mods and detuning of the tips)"

Camera person might not have been the editor and or the person controlling the message.
It's also possible/plausible (and likely?) that the guy in front of the lens had no clue in terms of the finished product either.

It was probably a conscious decision by BD/director to show him by himself because the subject of the video was only about him. The director was controlling the message, and I believe he was the cameraman, too. i think they were wrong, but it makes a better video visually just to have one skier the focus.

i don't wanna make a big deal of this, just an observation that "Avie forcasters probably should set good examples in any and all videos they are in, like always skiing with a partner." Just my opinion, nothing more.
