    The stuff on that page seemed dark and over processed.
    It may be because I was looking on my phone but you would think with controlled lighting the bikes and riders would stand out from the background better.

    Nope, not your phone - I had the same reaction looking at them on my computer. In a good MTB photo the rider should pop out from the background, IMO.
