obviously, i can't speak for twins' relative, but most veterans with ptsd i know who reenlisted didn't do it because they found peace in the military. they did it because the rigidity of the military and war and combat is the only realm they function in anymore and it's the only place they can find people who understand what they are dealing with.

the general population is ignorant and cruel and that is the worst thing to confront under those circumstances.

IMO something must be done to help people with PTSD. More research and to that end raising funds for same? Shorter tours for military? Increased safety nets? Whatever might help, try it until we find a solution to the horrible pain these individuals are living with because it is as deadly as cancer and we need to find a solution if not a cure.

rape, assault, domestic shootings, disasters of all kinds -- ptsd is an epidemic and it multiplies exponentially. people can ridicule it all they want but there is a reason our culture is getting more violent not less and that we are exporting more violence not less. if you think about mass cultural ptsd and the overwhelming impacts and the traits of the people who inflicted it, you only have to go back 150-300 years and imagine how fucked up the foundation of this culture is. we've glossed over it with patriotism and tv and manufactured violent imagery, and hyper consumption, but the core of this nation in particular is brutal violence and we will never get past it. we force other countries to look at their shit and grovel for forgiveness. but the mythology of this country is the reason we have so much gun violence domestically and war everywhere else. it doesn't matter what any other country is doing. this country is insane. i don't mean to be political but ptsd and a cultural response to it is part of the discussion drift.

a heightened police state doesn't mean a country is less violent psychogically and also doesn't account for state violence in a multitude of forms -- domestic and otherwise. i'm also pretty sure gun violence and mass shooting stats are off the charts exclusively in the u.s. unless you're in a war zone.
