Yeah Audi and Volvo. Meh. I don't get it. My boss and his GF both have Audi wagons. When one's not in the shop, the other is.

I don't know if the cost of ownership is lower in Europe and so as the miles stack up, the work can be done cheaply. That's the only issue stateside, the cars are expensive to fix. But the driving experience is much different. I haven't driven an american saloon or estate that drives a nicely as my R did. Some american cars can turn, but they tend to be coupe's and don't lend themselves to multiple people riding in the car.

I'm sure they drive and handle nicely, but being more of a function vs fashion/status/me too car guy, my old 1995 Honda Accord 5 speed front wheel drive wagon with studless snows was an amazing car all the way around. The Flex, for how big it is has plenty of power, handles well, and with snows (I chose the front wheel drive model) it's an absolute unstoppable tank in the winter. Great ground clearance too.

I have owned 4 Volvos; if my V70R had been anywhere near as reliable as my old 850 turbo wagon I would have driven it into the ground. I loved the appearance and performance of the R, but I am so damn happy it belongs to someone else now.

I have owned 4 Volvos; if my V70R had been anywhere near as reliable as my old 850 turbo wagon I would have driven it into the ground. I loved the appearance and performance of the R, but I am so damn happy it belongs to someone else now.

Sorry to hear those stories, as knocking on wood, my R with a 165k on her has been what I would consider pretty problem free. Yes the angle gear needed to be replaced at 110k and was $$$ and there was an AC condenser and one rear bearing that crapped out too, but for the most part just normal maintenance, which is a hella lot cheaper than a car payment.

One of the highlights of the R was the brembo's. The R design volvo's since have not had those. They were FANTASTIC and I think the car would have been much less w/out them. The brakes on the car above seem neutered in comparison...

Let's just say if I had really done my homework before I bought the car, I never would have brought it home. Reading the Volvo R page on Facebook post-purchase was an eye opener. And a downer. I love the passion of many of the owners, but I can't stand being nickeled-and-dimed. My fingers are crossed for you and all other R owners.

I traded the R for a Jetta 1.4 last month. The R was pretty reliable, then the AC, starter, and throttle body all went in a month. I miss it, but the Jetta is nice for a $15k car. CarPlay head unit and way better acceleration and mileage than the old 2.0 motor I had years ago in the GTI. If I set the cruise for 60, I can get over 40MPG on pump gas.

Now the Odyssey is dying, so that will need to get replaced soon, preferably before ski season.

The base Alltrak with a 6spd stick will be about $25.5k with leather, CarPlay, etc. That's really tempting. The current XC70 is a really nice family wagon ride, but mileage is pretty low with the T5 or T6. The V90 CC will be super nice I imagine, but that will *not* be a cheap ride. Same goes for the XC90, although there are lease deals for $399/mo out there now.

I'm thinking either Alltrak S or used 4Runner. 4Runner is like #3 in the list of cars that are still on the road after 200k. And I really would like a car that I can take on the beach, or just beastmode through the snow when the town plows us in, and not rip stuff off the bottom.

My Outback was great for just not really giving a shit, but wasn't the best place to spend a few hours. The Volvo sure was.

Alltrack/Sportwagen is 30.4 cubic feet behind the rear seat. New Outback is 35.5 and the old Outbacks like my 02 were 31.5 or so iirc. I think our 03 4R must be upper thirties or so...huge. I think the Forester is more similar in size to the V dub and supposedly also available in a six speed for 2017 although searching numerous dealerships inventory has turned up zero 2017 Forester 6 speed manuals. Manual Alltrack hitting showrooms after the holidays sometime. Fuck VW though for being the one piece of shit company left on planet earth making the car I really want.

My 2004 Jetta wagon 1.8T is hanging in there. Replaced the AC recently and now the main cooling fan motor just took a shit this year but 175K miles so its been around.

The Odyssey space is nice to have, but we rarely use it. I usually was in the R by myself, except for taking the kids to daycare or preschool. The Jetta has 3in more legroom than the R did, but the trunk in the R was huge. The positives to #vanlife is the kids get more space = less fighting, and I can put all our bikes in the back of the Odyssey standing up with no rack.

Had the R for eight years and got fewer tickets than with the Outback. Nobody looks twice at the dadwagon.

I spent a little time yesterday in an 2017 outback belonging to a friend. As an adult sized passenger in the back, it felt roomie. Subi gave it to them with 5yr 0% financing.
