    Mags with websites-your suggestions please

Looking for a cheap website provider. Need capability for video and photos.

Who do you use, and why?

    Thanks.

No more questions today, I promise.

Uhmmm, do you have an ISP? They come with free webspace ya know.

Otherwise, you didn't identify how many Mb you need to host, what your anticipated download volume in Mb per month (yes, it can affect your price, they refer to it as "amount transferred"), whether you have special needs for types of things you need to host. Just as a warning, if you have high transfer needs, that will be likely what will bite you in the butt if you don't plan for it.

Also, if you don't have any of those special needs that are Microsoft creations like ASP, you might save yourself some headache and avoid downtime by using something other than a Windows server (like Unix). Denial of service attacks hit Windows servers harder than others due to hacker/virus community concentrating on Windows OS.

Otherwise, try looking for options on places like

My ISP does not provide enough space. I am trying to really get into some video editing and photo projects that will eat up a bunch of space.

I am looking at Bluehost to start. Know anything about these guys? It all looks good- 4 gig storage, 100 gig/month transfer, and a buttload of software included. The price is under $10/month. Which is about what I am willing to spend right now. When I get really hooked and get my new computer, I can upgrade.

    Thanks for all the responses.

I use interland.com. Good pricing and plans and very reliable.
I've used them for years and have half a dozen clients on them, too.

Whatever you decide, stay the hell away from AIT. AIT is one of the largest and lamest of the hosting services. We (Wife and I.) were on them for a couple years, frequent down times and continual bad service.

If you are going to have a bunch of videos be aware that uses quite a bit of bandwidth. Do some calculations and figure out how much bandwidth you'll be needing before shopping around.

If you exceed bandwidth, how much do they nail you for?

It would seem that going with the cheap plan at first, and then upgrading as you figure it out, would make sense.
    But that seems too easy.

    Positives:
    $9.95 per month
Unlimited disk space (I'm up to 6 GB currently)
Un-metered traffic (I average about 1.5 GB/month. Have been as high as 6 GB).
    Pretty good download speeds
Full ssh access (good if you know Unix)
    Unlimited email addresses

    Negatives:
    Shared server space
Sometimes slow response times (I think it depends on shared server load)

Edit: I have a second website hosted with this provider and we average about 30 GB/month data transfer and 2.5 million hits/month.

I host all my company websites and personal sites with jumpline.com. Awesome tech support, many options like dedicated ip, ssl, mysql, php, ssh, and domain/subdomain settings. Think I'm paying 14 or 16 a month with a gig of storage and 1.5 gigs of transfer per month. Works for me.

Just curious, what'cha looking for and why wasn't it a good deal?

Also, that bluehost deal looks pretty enticing.

Edit: I just called bluehost and set up a trial account. They're located and hosted in Orem, Utah.

So, if you do sign up, wanna pm me before you do so I get another referral?
Not on here much anymore. Drop me an email if you want to contact me. Have a wonderful winter!

We cannot offer un-metered storage for massive audio/video/image archives, misc. data files, or mirror sites.
If they updated to PHP5, I would be very interested in it for some personal sites, however.
