Here's some photos from skiing Gannett Peak last week. We started at the Green River Lakes.
After 13 miles of mostly flat jogging along the Green River we turned up Wells Creek
Then into 'The Cleft'
There's one for the bucket list
When we popped out of the Cleft we were hit with this magnificent view of Gannett
Our route went up the obvious chute on the left side of the peak and then up the north ridge
lots of other peaks to drool over
Here's the final 4th class north ridge to the summit.
my partner wasn't comfortable doing this section so he hung out on the saddle and took photos while I scrambled up to tag the summit
views from zee top!
I remember reading a report by Steve Romeo who said you could just sidestep through the cliff band on the north face, but I wasn't sure exactly where was the best place. So here I am looking around..... It's obvious from my friend's perspective where I should come through but I couldn't hear him so I ended up downclimbing through a much more spicy section. Oh well.
perfect powder on the Gannett Glacier with Dinwoody Creek far below
more glaciers on the west side
heading out
magical lighting with the storm clouds
back down the cleft
Crossing the Green at Three Forks
Squaretop looking awesome in the fading light
Round trip was exactly 40 miles in about 17 hours. It could have been much faster if there was more snow in lower Wells Creek which would have saved us about 2 hours of slow boulder hopping. I'd love to come back in late winter next season and hit some of the other great lines in the area.
