So I bought a cheap car...

Well, I sold my '87 Subaru GL Wagon 4WD.

It was time. She needed alot of work and was no longer worth it.

In exchange, I bought my friend's '88 4WD Subaru Justy. It is in mint condition, very well maintained, only 100K miles. I love this thing. It gets insane gas mileage and actually scoots pretty quick. Only thing is... it's about the size of a friggin' golf cart. Everyone at work is making fun of me saying I look like Chris Farley driving that thing. I tell them "well, how much did YOU spend at the gas station in your F-150?" but it hasn't helped.

What can I do to make it "cooler"?

I put my Yakima on it with the bike rail, ski clips and such, but it still looks like a lawn mower missing the grass catcher on the back. I have a huge Thule 600 box that is literally longer than the car, but I'm afraid a gust of wind would flip me over with that thing on there.

Should I just suck it up and chalk it up to being eco-friendly, or should I get redneck on it and make it a backyard rally car with a wodden wing and a cofee can muffler?

I'g go with the green side of things if you look around at the subie forums, especialy thoses outside NA there are some great tips on making it go faster and use even less gas!

I don't think they make spinners that small.

BTW, my friend (previous owner) put a pretty decent sound system in it, considering it is two speakers mounted in the dash.

I can rock my hippy music and slap a 'save the earth' sticker on the back and be all set!

    edit:

It is of this vintage (different color, trim and graphics, but same body style.)

You can be eco-friendy AND cool just not with a Justy. What were you thinking?

otherwise, tint the windows and get some pimping mags on that, it'll be a whole other car.

One of the coolest thing I ever saw was last winter: A cherry red Yugo with a rack of 4 Hella lights mounted on the roof. Give that a try. . . it looks badass. I wish I had my camera that day.

I say disguise it as a mini-cooper, though that might not look much tougher in Wyoming. Other option is to rally car it up. Does it have the adjustable rear suspension? If so, jack up the tail as high as it'll go.
What color is it? If it's white you can get stuff at home depot made to cover windows to make them look like stained glass - that'll look good. Or you can get wood veneer and make it a woody wagon.

If you ever need body panels for that thing, come to Portland. There are dozens in my favorite u-pull-it junkyard.

There almost has to be a lift kit available for this car.

    Lift kit
    tall tires
    mad driving lights
whatever performance shit you can stuff onto the engine (hooker headers and crane cams? )

Justy's are an absolutely hideous car rivaled only by the horizon, and ford fesitva. If you were actualy serious about making it look cool these are some things you can do to help it along and still be low key so people don't look at it too hard.

Fog lights in the front grille out as wide as possible so it makes your car look lower.

Roof rack WITH fairing, if you dont have the fairing on there the roof rack will just make the car loook even higher and more ugly.

Light Tint, smoke rear lights, dark tint "visor" on windshield

14 inch black 5 spoke rims, not necesarily 5 spokes or 14s but something that wont draw attention to your car but if glanced at will make it look ok, black rims usualy do the trick on that.

Molded mudflaps, again make the car look lower without lowering it, and without the cost and ridicouls look of side skirts on a justy.

    Clear the turn signals/idicators.

    Europlates

You could probably get all that stuff for like 200 bucks at a junkyard, which is probably more than a justy deserves. All that stuff is pretty low key so people wont really make fun of you for trying to immiate a car tuner, it will just make it look low key and newer, rather than sticking out like an 88 justy.

Texas Longhorns bolted to the hood.

    Rally lights would add manhood:

And I think the wood spoiler would be good also:

What about camo paint? or at least primer gray or primer red??

    Yours aint that short:

I thought the Justy had numerous recalls for safety and reliability?

Kick ass little AWD car though, interested on the longevity.

Yeah, I threw my fairing on it last night, and it helped ALOT. My fairing has alot of stickers on it so it kinda draws attention away from the car.

Hell, I'm just using it as a scoot around the town car and maybe quick trips to Vedauwoo or the Snowy Range with it. I'm not fully comfortable taking it out on I-80, so I won't be shootin' over to Utah in it. My wife drives our Impreza and we use that for trips, etc. The Impreza needs a new wheel bearing, front struts and a clutch soon, though. No biggie.

You need one of these across the Justy's windshield:

Chup, you crack me up! A bunch of rednecks around here have that on their old Chevy trucks.

I did consider a Subaru logo banner accross the windshield, but that is kinda ghetto, too.

I put a "Fear This" banner on an ex-girlfriend's college car -- it was a beige-ish Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. Looked good!

Go on, put one on the Justy.

except that one's about twice as long as his car is wide...he'd have to cut it in half and do a

    fear
    this

    -OR-

get two of 'em and put them on the sides...sorta like racing stripes.

edit: and what's all this 'lift it' nonsense? slam that fukker to the ground... gangsta.
