Thread: Volkl BMT 94 - how good is it?

I moved them from ~-2 to ~+2. Major difference. They are definitely a ski I enjoy now. They truly excel in spring crust. I found I can just carve them in crust and break the tails loose when needed. They are very reassuring that the tips will stay on top of crust and soft snow. On soft they float reasonably well. In nice untracked pow they can even be chargey. They do require undivided attention though. When not driving them they are nervous and easily get thrown around.

Bump. I love them so much that I got the BMT 109. I have been looking for something to fit in my touring quiver between the lotus 120 and the BMT 94. They're going to get the trab vario 2!

Unfortunately, the BMT 109 I got is only 176cm long. So now I am wondering where I should mount them. I had issues with the BMT 94 186 mounted at -2, and generally I enjoy skis mounted forward. At 150 pounds of perfectly balanced explosive and endurance muscle, I am relatively light. Because these are 176, I'm wondering if I should mount them on or behind the line?

I would go on the line with them being 176, and then go forward if that doesn't work. 176 on the line are a shit ton of fun. I really enjoyed BMT94s at +1, but was not blown away by BMT109 186s at +1.5 - though the latter could have been caused by Tectons having a way different delta than my other bindings. I went with on the line when i remounted them with Vario2s, though I have yet to ski them.

And since you mention the Lotus120, I've skied both BMT122s and Lotus117s recently. I prefer the V Werks construction and flex pattern by a fair bit. I found the L117s to be a bit meh, as in I think they would ski better with a stiffer shovel (area from the bindings to the beginning of the front rockers) and slightly softer tails.

Thanks. What did you not like about being +1? What area are you in? Any chance it's BC?

L120 is perfect in every way. Every other ski I get is only to extend their life, and maybe my knees in late spring.

I think it was that thhey just did not feel as good as 176 108s on the line or 186 94s at +1. They just felt a bit cumbersom there, though again - the 5-8 degree delta (lower heels) compared to my other bindings is probably the real culprit.

I am based on the west coast of Norway aka Scandinavistan, so sadly no BC.

And do not get me wrong, I think that the L117s could be a great soft snow ski, especially in untracked/fresh snow. It just did not make me consider phasing out BMT109s or 122s at all, though that is a tall order though as I freaking looooooove BMTs.

My 176cm BMT94s are mounted at +1 because of a hole conflict and I fucking love them. Can't find a damn thing wrong about them. I think with the full rocker they're not very sensitive to mount point.

Got out today on some BMT 94s I got in gear swap (thanks Marshal!)

What a great ski for variable snow. Hit pow, sun crust, corn, you name it today and it skied everything so easy.

Previous ski in this category was a (few gen old) zero g 95, which was great on consistent corn but would get so locked in on bad snow that it was sometimes scary. And it kind of sucked in powder.

Very happy with the bmt, that design seems ideal for sub optimal snow.

Also first time skiing alpinists which I generally liked.

Bump because this thread convinced me to pull the trigger on a pair of these in 166 for my 13 y.o. Evo had them used with Tyrolia Attack 13 demo bindings for $161, just silly cheap. I got the last 166 pair, but there's at least one pair of 186s left if anyone is interested: https://www.evo.com/outlet/used/ski-...-demo-bindings

Hell, I'm tempted to buy the 186s for me, though I'm concerned they might be a bit light for my taste/style.

eta: Couldn't resist, bought the 186s and that was the last pair. Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up Hopefully used demo bindings don't kill me.

I have those skis, but what a value with free shipping. Guessing just one mount with the demo binding.

I’ll join the tease. I got a heads up from John_B (You da Man!!) here on the forum and my search for a pair of 176’s is over! Of course I’m curious about the condition but for 170$ shipped I’m willing to gamble. Tyrolias will be on GS soon. I may still chop the tails off and remount forward on the 186’s I got from Cat in January in the name of science, but regardless, 176’s on the way!

Would have bought them if I didn't buy a bike yesterday (or wasn't married).

Deal of the century! Paid $700 for some well used BMT94 in 176 last year, and I would have paid more if I had to

I’m a bit giddy about it, must be mid October! Big props to John_B for the PSA.

Yeah, dick move, but in my defense I had no intention of buying them when I first posted. As penance, I'll share this link to a set of 100Eights with Griffon demos for $180: https://www.evo.com/outlet/used/ski-...emo-bindings-2

Happy to help riff. To pass on some of the credit I saw DTM posting about skis for his kid and the link was in his post.

Looks like I will have a pair of bmt94 in186 with choice of skins coming up for sale shortly. In very good condition with one mount for Marker Kingpins.

Edit to say these skis are going up the coast to Singlecross

These arrived right before a trip so I just unboxed them today. Some topsheet scuffs and chips but not bad and less so on the 166s. Bases are nearly perfect, may have even got a basic tune before sale. Very happy with the condition for under $200 with bindings. I would definitely buy from Evo's used stock again. I believe these were marked as "Value" condition.

Mine were decent too; one noteable chip on the sidewall into the carbon but a little epoxy will sort it out. Bases immaculate

Well, I couldn’t resist a little rainy day experimenting. Having scored great 176’s, i could afford to take a chance on toying with my 186’s, which are on the 4th or 5th mount, and are too long to fit in my packraft for silly boat supported outings. Also, my mount was -1 and i had to go up a size in my boots.
So! I cut off 8cm of tail, remounted at +2, and trimmed up the skins with new tip hardware. Boom, I’ve got 178 BMT94’s, with a longer radius than 176’s, and a spry +2 mount. And they are so beat that i can ski them with reckless abandon (the ultimate luxury) and fire up the 176’s whenever these are completely toast. Click image for larger version.

    Cool!

At 8cm, is there some kind of spacer/insert you cut into, or do you have to seal the core somehow?

I sealed a bit of the core with gflex, the spacer wasn’t quite that long….

Thanks. Maybe I’ll try something similar when my 94s are nearing their end
