    Nelson/Whitewater Conditions

Headed up to Nelson/Whitewater end of next week. Anyone have some beta on conditions, both resort and backcountry? Has the alpine stayed cool and winter-like?

Week before last spent 10 days in Nelson. 5 days at Whitewater, 3 days cat, and a day backcountry. We went to the Coldsmoke Festival. Everything is hard and set up. We had a really good time, but it required a good attitude. If you go looking for, um, powder you will be disappointed. A couple sunny days when it was above freezing we actually had some nice turns on the south facing stuff. Bring crampons.

12cm of fresh on Tuesday, softened things up a bit, still cut through a bit to the seemingly perpetual refrozen chunk. The groomers are fast & hold an edge well. On a positive note avalanche danger is low right now.

Touring at Kootenay Pass was ok on Wednesday, 10-15cm of light snow on a firm base, best on smooth open moderate slopes. Temperatures rising tomorrow and through the weekend should speed the transition to corn.

wow, can't believe there's talk of corn already up there! i'm headed into a backcountry lodge and hoping the alpine conditions have held a bit. noted on crampons...i actually heard from a friend of a friend who was at a backcountry lodge that crampons were used throughout the week. nuts! i'm a glass half-full kind of guy so we'll have fun no matter what conditions we encounter.

My group of 5 will be in Nelson at the same time snuffleupagus. Hoping for a change in weather, but it doesn't look good. Some models showing moisture Tuesday-Thursday...but it looks warm. We'll make the best of it, crampons and lots of goretex. Hard not to have a good time in Nelson.

Raaaaaaiiinn @ WW. Some heavy fresh up high but slooooow, straight down & riding on the tips on the lower angles, moguls are where it's at. Glory chair closed & everything else shutdown @ noon, bottom half of mountain is in full on meltdown, creeks raging & Silver King loading area flooding. They say they'll reopen tomorrow which would be nice as up to 20 cm expected. Had a great time though, you know what they say about a bad day of skiing & i'll take this over the death chunder we've had as of late.

bumpidy bump bump bump...plans are to roll narth in the AM and hoping it is not raining or even better...spewing freezing piss at Whitewater. At 07:46 this morning the marketing department pushed out... "Cloudy with light snow in the morning, intensifying mixed precipitation in the afternoon. Freezing level 1200 metres rising to 1500 meters in the afternoon."

    Updates appreciated!

Cheers Flowing Alpy, I have full intentions of crossing tips with sparkletarte, H and TheTheo. I will have them circle back and update with the BBI master.

cmcrawfo I checked the southern interior thread prior to digging this up. Most recent posts were not relevant to the desired info so I thought I would try and stay on topic here vs derailing the bc stoke over there.

More of a response to where is sparkle tart. The more threads the merrier. Plenty of stoke to go around

    Hiiiii!

It,s raining at the turn off. Webcam looks like maybe not raining halfway up. Rain is pretty hard and straight ( ) at my house.

Freezing levels sound ok but it all depends on the wind. Trend looks to be colder.

With all those disclaimers i think it will be fine.

I,m still out. I can hook you up with skier h, the_teo is on here and is prob a better witness.

Pissing rain in Revy, I'd expect Nelson to be the same, if they're getting anything at all... Avalanche.ca is calling for freezing levels between 1600-1900m, should get better as the weekend rolls in though...
