    Anyone have an iBook G3?

I have an 800mhz, 14 inch, iBook G3 that I got about two years ago. Last summer it freaked me out by getting these squiggly lines all over the display and eventually the display quit working. I found out that Apple had extended the warrenty for G3 iBooks logic boards and that was what failed on my machine. I sent it in, they fixed it free and sent it back. I was quite relieved since I had opted not to get the extended (applecare) warranty and I was past the one-year warranty. The same thing happened to my GFs iBook, which is the same as mine. And now, it just happened again to mine computer a couple days ago for the second time. It's not a bad failure, since you can still work with the computer for a limited duration once the problem begins--I managed to back up my hard drive. Now, my iBook is going back to Apple to get fixed again. I did some net searching and discovered this problem is pretty widespread with the G3 ibook (It actually happened also to my friend, twice). I guess if the logic board fails three times they will totally replace the unit with a newer G4 ibook. The only catch is that the extended logic board warrenty will only cover you for three years from purchase date, which is December for me. So, I plan on working the shit out of that little ibook (burning lots of DVDs) so it can fail a third time and I get a new computer free. Anyway, I just thought I'd share for all those with G3 iBooks and those who may be looking at buying one used. As far as I know this problem is specific to the G3 ibook. G4 iBooks, Powerbooks, etc don't seem to have any platform wide problems like this.

I've got a 700 MHz G3 iBook. It too was afflicted with the display problem. I have gone through 3. I've had it fixed on warranty (within the 1st year) and then with the extended program. It appears Apple hasn't actually fixed the problem, so it may be prone to keep happening on the replacements. The last time I put it into the shop, it came back with sleep not working when the screen is shut and also the fan comes on intermittently if the bottom of the chassis is pressured. But frankly I was too sick of putting it in to get fixed again, but on the positive side I too had written mine off and I'm just stoked it is still working and playing DVDs, Yearbook by MSP lately ...

PS. I got a Powerbook G4 12" after my iBook, I continue to love Apple despite the baggage from the G3
