bump for not being an alcoholic. Turns out I just like to drink. I'm down to maybe 3 cocktails a week, and a beer a night. Sometmes 6.

I miss drinking at work, not allowed these days. I sure could use a good buzz to get through most work meetings.

Next summit I am going to spike trackheads vitamin water, get jax drunk, outdrink pinner, toast iceman, salute buster with a good red, buy bobmc a beer of his choice, and talk lans kid into doing a jello shot.

This is a good thread. I'm taking a few days off from drinking after a ridiculously alcohol soaked holiday season. I like to drink too, a beer a night a few nights a week, a night or two per week of some binge drinking if there is something going on. I have to admit I am enjoying the current respite; however, tomorrow night I will have some beers for sure, and that sounds good too. I think I'm clinically insane.

Why is it that most skiers I know are either big drinkers or recovering alcoholics?

Because we're the kind of hedonistic people who know how to have fun. We're the kind of people who enjoy life and aren't too worried about tomorrow to enjoy today. Powder is a party in and of itself.

alias, thanks for bumping this, would've missed it. IMHO, skiing is synonymous with partying. When the ski club scene is in full effect, the open bar parties can wreak havoc on your liver after many seasons of full bore skiing and raging.
The sunday morning beer bloodys and coffee juiced with Jameson and Baileys can start catch up to ya when you round the 40 mark.

Just my .02: my life has been greatly - and I mean greatly - improved since I quit drinking.

A few points: Consider that you don't have to be an alcoholic in order to have a drinking problem (likely my case). Also, if you're worried about becoming an alcoholic, one sure way not to become an alcoholic is to not drink - kind of like don't play with fire if you don't want to get burned. Finally, consider that your quality of life might actually improve if you give it up (which doesn't seem that surprising on the face of it, really).

Now excuse me while I go compulsively buy some new Head Supermojo 105s (i'm not even kidding).

there is a crap ton of post on here and i dont know how to read that much so i stopped, but i have been forced to la for medical research (trying the med school, never get a chance to ski route) but over one alcoholic drink a day will cause problems for you down the line. First, your immune system will be weakened leading to more sick days (that dont involve skiing) second, you are probably already neurologically addicted and your body has changed the amount of neurotransmitters it is producing because of you drink for half of the time you are awake. Withdrawl is a horrible (alcohol withdrawl is actually one of the only withdrawls that can actually kill you (not a reason to keep drinking)). But I would say if you just cut out the weekday 12 hours of drinking (60 hours a week!!) you would do a whole lot better

The British Empire was built on sodomy and rum.

People have been drinking wine and beer for a loooong time, if your life falls apart, stop drinking, if you can handle it, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

I average 4-5 beers a day, or 2-3 Crown and cokes.

Here's the thing as I see it.

I have friends who have died in car accidents, from suicidal depression, from Cancer, from avalanches, skiing into rocks, falling off of slick roofs, kayaking, drowning etc...

My point is there are so many ways to get sick and or die that you cannot control, worrying about the health effects of a few extra drinks a night isn't that significant.

I do stick to the 5 o'clock rule most days and would never drink in the morning or at work or while skiing for that matter, only at the end of my day for me.

The holidays have been hard on me though, too many xmas parties and open bars. But every night I get hammered it snows, so how can I slow down.

There is just something about that first beer in the morning...

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence, I think not.

I'm a 2 drinks on weeknights, 3-5 on weekend nights kind of guy. I drink more than 6 in a night propably 3-4 times a year (depending on how many weddings I go to that year). I never drink before 5:00pm (just a rule). But I do feel lately like I would have a really hard time giving up my 2drinks per night. Thinking about going dry for a couple of weeks, just to see what it's about.
Not sure why I felt the need to post about it. I guess because the original post brought up a concern I've been having.

I feel like almost everyone I know is in the same boat (maybe not a coincidence). I like to drink but I COULD and sometimes do go without drinking on any weeknight (or any weekend night for that matter) for weeks at a time. Sometimes I feel like a few weeknight beers, sometimes scotch especially if i'm feeling a little sick but I easily can go weeks without having a drink at all.

If I go out, have a party, am on a ski trip/vacation however, weeknight or weekend chances are 95% + that I'm drinking a lot - more than enough to feel shitty the next day. A problem? Maybe in the eyes of some, but I'm comfortable with it, know I could stop if needed to and generally see it the way danimal does ^^^.

For what it's worth I also eat very healthy and hit the gym 4-6 days a week + baseball/skiing/golf/cycling so a few binge nights and 1-2 weeknight drinks a month isn't THAT bad in the grand scheme.

Remind me never to be your friend!
If some of the best times of my life were skiing the UP in -40 wind chill with nothing but jeans, cotton long johns and a wine flask to keep warm while sleeping in the back of my dad's van... does that make me old school?

If you wondering if there's a problem,...its likely that there is a problem. You just don't want to admit to yourself what you already know.

The guy with a problem was from like 3 years ago. Page top bump shows that I now KNOW I don't have a problem.

So please quit telling me I do. Out of all my friends I behave the BEST when loaded, no problem!

I just went four months without drinking. Drank a few beers and some champagne over Christmas, but haven't even thought about it since. I used to drink all the time. Probably a bottle of wine or two or a sixer every or every other other day for ten years. Never really got too wasted, (spending my early 20's living in Las Vegas got those impulses out of my system fast) just enjoyed the taste of good beer or liquor. Really. One day the ol' lady and I just agreed it was in the interest of our health to scale back (or pretty much quit altogether) , so we pretty much did. Strangely enough it hasn't really bothered me too much since.

Well, while ice climbing last night we ran into another guy that claimed he had to wear an alcohol monitoring ankle bracelet. I'm guessing he got nabbed for DUI.

I'd like to drink everyday, I really enjoy the way it feels. I'll buy a six pack at the store now and then with the intention of getting a good buzz on but the same problem always stands in my way. Food. I love to eat and I never get a good buzz when I eat alot. Maybe I have a food addiction.

I am 51 years old and have a six pack of beer in my refrigerator that has been there for more than two weeks. That never would have lasted a day in my twenties. I had a glass of wine with dinner and am now enjoying a glass of scotch, but that is about it for me on a Friday night. And I am not even skiing tomorrow -- maybe Sunday. I learned fairly early on that I would rather feel good early in the morning than be drunk at night.

Weed, on the other hand, was something I indulged in too much of for too long. I ended up using it to avoid dealing with my emotions, which turned out not to be such a healthy thing. As of today I haven't toked in 13 1/2 years but I still feel high.

I boiled my thermometer, and sure enough, this spot, which purported to be two thousand feet higher than the locality of the hotel, turned out to be nine thousand feet LOWER. Thus the fact was clearly demonstrated that, ABOVE A CERTAIN POINT, THE HIGHER A POINT SEEMS TO BE, THE LOWER IT ACTUALLY IS. Our ascent itself was a great achievement, but this contribution to science was an inconceivably greater matter.

i had the same question for myself last year

i quit for several months, expecting to lose weight if nothing else. i did not feel withdrawal any more than when we tossed out the tv 5 years ago. but i also did not notice any benefits. no weight loss, no difference in the morning, no difference in mood or energy, maybe a little more awake when i go to bed but no difference in sleep, etc. but i did save enough money to buy a new pair of skis.
