How much of your personality can/ do you attribute to your genetics/ ethnicity?

Is this something you feel can/ occasionally should be controlled? I'm a kraut mick- definitely like drinking and jokes and very rarely get into fights but I can be very hard headed sometimes. My temper was a little out if control when I was a kid and my Irish mother would say " don't be such a Hun". My day going ness would gotta far in college and be dad would say straighten the fuck up...

How again did you get so drunk by the last sentence? You were on a roll there, you just couldn't keep it together?

To answer your question, I'm 3/4 English with 2 grandparents immigrating (legally, you dopes) to the US. I'm proper, reserved, and always impeccably dressed.

The Czech/Dutch mixed 1/4 probably accounts for all my 'slip ups' and boozing.

I think we are a creation of our environment. If your an English/Czech raised by Indonesian parents, I doubt if your ancestry has much to do with how you respond to the daily stress of life.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

I do believe we are all part nature, part nurture. In other words, our genetic makeup definitely influences our behavior, though whether it's as broad-brushed as saying all Irish like to drink or whatever, I'm not sure. But, your genetic makeup definitely has something to do with it - how else to explain siblings who have very different temperaments from each other despite being raised in very similar environments?

My great grandfather was a real piece of shit. Alcoholic, wife and daughter beating, anti-semetic, racist, lazy bastard who lost the family farm before the depression hit and even supported the Nazis in WWII (he lived in the US). Anytime I think something bad or evil I wonder if that is his genetics coming through to me.

Nothing like getting slapped and hit with rulers by Irish nuns at an early age to form a certain personality.

And then have your Polish aunt try to take your ear off every time the parents left you in her care. Fun times.

My dad died when I was a little kid. He had 2 brothers, one of whom I've seen only several times in my life, another I see maybe once every 5 years or so. What's interesting about this is that when my uncle and I talk about our experiences in life it's shocking to me how similar we are...and I'm told my father was similar, as was my grandfather. I have no doubt there are major genetic influences in our baseline personality type....at least in the case of my genetics and my personality.

My sister was adopted. We have very different personalities. But we laugh at some of the same stupid shit. Luckily our grandparents who were Catholic (one from each side) had the sense to abandon the church decades before I was born, so neither of us was subjected to the moral corruption and abuse so commonly inflicted upon members of that most sinister organization.

That might not mean what you think it means. Translated: "You (formal) pair yourself (or they pair themselves) shit head" Either way it's Sheißkopf - one word.

wtf, is that a b or infinity or what? This is a thread in English with a distinct lack of loafer references. Thus far.

Fuck that noise. Genetics results in minor differences in how neuro transmitters and other chemical signal systems work, but the rest of your personality is pure environment. And I suspect int hose limited areas where genetics plays any role, intraethnic differences are greater than interethnic differences.

The OP is merely trying to assign to one's "Irishness" the fat that you lik ealcohol, which is a common trait among all human ethnic groups. Find an isolated tribe in the amazon and you'll discover they ferment the local fruit one way or another.

My daughter, my mother in law and one of my best friends are adopted. What I see is that they're just a bit "off". Almost like they're out of their natural element. My MIL is a trustfunder debutant from St. Louis that just wants to drive her beater, (redundant), Subaru BRAT with her dogs to trailheads and hike. Friend is super smart, picks up languages in a second, etc. but bounces around from job to job. Daughter lives in cross country ski land and hates it, even though she's as fast as anyone here.

I think it's like this. You're genetically gifted to be good with your hands. Environmentally you could be a thief or a watch maker.

Since I've had kids I'm more convinced that there's something to the genetics involved.
Previously, I'd dismissed the notion of breed as significant and put more store in environment and nuture or lack thereof.

Seeing my kids behave, their affinities and struggles, particularly the difference between the sexes has changed my mind.

    By the same person?

Or is this one of those logic puzzles where the answer is they're all the same person?

This doesn't make any sense to me. It is just as likely that my kids share my behaviors, affinities and struggles because they learned them from me and the Mrs., as that those are somehow genetically pre-determined. Add to that the fact that they are growing up not only in your presence, but in largely the same culture you grew up in, maybe even in the same subcutlures, and even micro-cultures.

My brother's adopted son has the same facial expressoins as my brother. Intersting anecdote, but no more.
