    monitor help

k, so it's about high time that i got a new monitor, and the choice should be easy (from the 2 that i'm looking at), but it's proven to be kind of tough. both are LCD:

choice one is the apple 20 inch monitor, $900 from the education store, 1680 x 1050 max resolution.

choice two is a samsung 21 inch monitor, a little under $600 after rebates from amazon, 1600 x 1200 max resolution.

so the apple has a little more vertical resolution (which would help since i'm doing a lot of work in photoshop, as well as for movies; more cinema-like), but the samsung has more height by 150 pixels and is $300 less.

opinions? any suggestions for other monitors? i'm looking to break out of the 1280 x 1024 max resolution (which is all my 17 in CRT can handle) and into something larger.

I have the Samsung SyncMaster 173P. Outstanding monitor with sharp resolution and really nice colors that can be rotated 90 degrees. Mine's a 17" and I don't know whether or not the larger jobbies are as good.

Apple buys the panels for their LCDs from Samsung. Other parts of the monitor are different, but the screen itself is made by Samsung.

samsung for sure- Any slight difference in performance between the two definetly isnt worth the extra money.

    I love my samsung 910t - 1000:1 contrast ratio = fkna!

You know, I am still shocked at how people swoon over LCDs. I truly hate them. They are scads better than they were say 5 years ago, but I still think they suck. Having the picture change when you move 20 degrees off-axis drives me nuts. I am also blessed with really good eyesight, and I find that I actually can distinguish every frikkin pixel.

Anyway, just as an aside, I finally bought a 'puter for home, and after a little bit of searching, I picked up 2 perfect-condition 4-year-old top-of-the-line 21" Trinitron-tubed CRT's for a grand total of $250. You might throw your back out trying to hoist the things onto your desk, but I would take them over the Apple displays any day (and I find the Apple's to be one of the better LCDs).
