Pico? That place will drive you crazy...crazy I tell you...and your feet will hurt from the flat spots.

Only on rare occasions when I feel like punishing myself. But even on skis that place is just way too flat on the lower half. I can see why it's a tele favorite.
But back to Magic. I hiked both sides last w/e, and was pretty impressed the general conditions of the trails, i.e., most of the lower had been mowed nicely, and some drainage projects were completed. The buildings and structures continue to make it look like an abandoned mining town, but the trails have been well looked after this year.

I thought I heard someone mention that a company was installing a new tower at the top of the mtn and the company leasing the land was improving the grading and drainage on the access road running up the hill so they can get equipment up & down to install & maintain the site. Not to take anything away from the mowing, which has been pretty damn good the last couple of years.

I know I can always count on you to never, ever turn.
Pico is cool and I'll ski anywhere, but it's an extra hour and the flavor is decidedly more vanilla. Midd would probably be hand-spun mint julep. While there's nothing wrong with either place I like rocky road myselfAlso I'm amazed it even needs to be said, but Maggots flat out build Magic up and will forever. Every year there's more to ski and I like it that way. It's never the same. From the trees positively stacked with sweat equity to the volly carpentry projects all over to the dozens of us who call it home there just isn't anywhere else like it. "Cheers on skis" is an understatement, it's a family through & through. I could never expect outsiders to really get it and I understand that angle too.
Pico is just a mountain. Magic is so much more, and I can't even put it into words. It truly needs to be lived, not just skied to be fully understood.
Cumbayaaaaaaaaaaaa my looooooooord, cumbayaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I live north of sugarbush on the lake side. unless I move south ( a real possibility), route 4 is as far south as I am going.
I've heard pico has good trees. I haven't skied there in years. The last time I was there, they still had the upper pike giant killer poma
We're talking Pico in the Magic thread:
DBdude, there is still some iron to reflect on, whats left of the upper pike poma. There are nice meadow skipping trees all of skiers left of the old poma track. There are steep trees with one very tight cliff band skiers left of the older outpost fixed double chair. From the summit quad you can get OB skiers left and drop under the power line (narrow) but can be hazardous if there is a lot of rime. Or continue OB left and into some nicely spaced steeper trees that start out with a low canopy and end in off camber glades. You have to be mindful of your exit too or your into the housing and miss the outpost bullwheel and are in for some post holing. There are a few more tree options to the east, but not as long and have less pitch. And oh yea, there's that bottom third of run-out too if you don't know your way home.
Pico feels like the blue collared step child of K-Town. The staff are generally much nicer and the skiing public is completely devoid of the yupity tude. And there is always some deal to be had. Cheap on Liftopia or their helping to re-stock the local food bank, over 50 Fridays, yada yada.
How does it compare to Magic? Apples and Kiwi... Magic makes up for the lack of infrastructure and a well organized administration with the "Cheers" atmosphere. It does own the hangin out on the back porch feel, but if your outside the TGR greater network, this place can feel clicky and your an interloper. It has the "left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" thing too. Maybe yall don't realize it, but there has been a substantial amount of bitchin. Rabbi DoWork does shoulder a lot of the exchanges. If you have skin in the game (shareholder cash never to be seen again) or your in the condos, then you earned your right to be pissy now and again.
Terrain? Magic has it cold; more consistent pitch, lots of variety, and the effort put in by the Illuminati make "hidden door to the left" an option just about anywhere. Just don't expect to find it on your own.
It is so much easier to get to Magic, especially if your approaching from the south or southwest. An hour or more shorter than pico/k-town/sb and points north. If they would only raise the 55mph speed limit on route 7 out of Bennington, holy shit that feels like the autobaun to nowhere sometimes.
And while I'm at it. WTF is it with that bazzilion dollar interchange north of Bennington? That 11/7 interconnect use to be a traffic light in the middle of town. What's there now outstrips the entry to JFK.

DBdude, come down for a day. I think you'll get it. We always seem to have a good day. Dec. 14th last year. 1 week before opening day. Probably a re-post. Expecting a death run this is what we found.
You can't beat someone to the line if they're there all night cause they locked their keys in the car…
Really though, hopefully that doesn't happen next time.![]()
So, on to the important stuff. Work days & Ullrfest. What say you chief coordinator and social planner, DW?
DoWork Clean your box. Bass fishing PM incoming.

Dude I just marked down some days last night! Three to be exact. One August, one Sept and one Oct that will coincide with Ullrfest weekend for radness/pow karma multiplier factor. Let me run them by Santa Klaus and I'll hopefully be able to post them up tomorrow.
Ullrfest is a lock though. Everybody up there loves having it and it's fully expected at this point. I get asked about it pretty regularly.
I'd be down as long as my schedule will allow me to be there! How deep is that place anyways? I always wondered that- I was weary of fishing it because it looks like it's shallow as hell... Little spots of pads all over usually means it doesn't have the depth to hold hippos over the winter.
How would you feel about Gale Meadows? I've always wanted to get over there but never had the time while I was up there. It looks freakin' ideal. No development, lots of timber in the north cove and that sweet looking heavy cover situation to the SW.
Cole pond deepest is 10-12 feet but it's generally pretty shallow. No public boat access and catch / release lets em grow. Typically have good luck there and it's a convenient size to fish w a kayak.
We call gale meadows the stingy pond. Some decent size bass and pickerel but need to work hard to put up numbers there (at least I do).

Happy to do either. The plus to Gale Meadows is we can bring a crew. Cole pond is a better fishery but I can only offer one seat as we can't bring other boats and I'm already a guest there.
