I'm hearing reports of snow at the summit.

Just kidding. Fuck this weather. Hoping that we can salvage trick to showoff for the holiday week...

Yeah, you gate bashers have it easy. We have to figure out something to do with our dozen or so ADD kids that resembles freeriding on what's looking like it may be a grassy ice skating rink. No bueno.

So, are you saying they made adequate snow to more or less guarantee Trick to Show Off? (All we really need is Show Off--we'll make them hike or use snowmobiles if necessary.) I did see that there's a flood watch for Londonderry right now, so I got a little worried.

Just spoke with a 'well placed source' within the Magicment who sounded less than optimistic about the prospects for even skiing at Magic on 12/26 (forget about setting gates)...said they're doing what they can, but he's fearful about what all this rain will mean for opening on Friday. Sounds like we might end up at Stratton or Mount Snow (or even possibly Haystack). Major suckage.

Dexter didn't you die skiing at Timber Ridge, Stoke Hedge or some other out bounds area? If you are alive, you made it clear that gates aren't necessary, Chinese downhill is where it's at.

More seriously, fuck this weather, I really don't want to go ski somewhere else. Any ideas regarding alternative Southern VT entertainment? I assume hiking will be out due to ridiculous mud, ponds won't be frozen for skating/hockey, and all snow activities (xc, snowshoe, etc.) will be out, thoughts?

Shooting ranges? Indoor go kart? Magic circle drinking competitions? I have my wife's entire family coming up and need ideas.

I recently bought a money eating house, so any suggestions of Manchester outlet shopping will be immediately thrown out.

You mean the rental didn't come with a pool table, ping pong table, football, and dart board?

There's a range down in Chester. Membership is like $20/yr and you can buy a membership on the spot at the hardware store in Chester. Nothing fancy, just a place to shoot. With the near biblical rain, I was thinking about bringing up some toys to do some shooting. I've got plenty to choose from & you're welcome to come along if you don't feel like paying to join the range for 2014 when 2015 is a week away.

We've got a bunch of family up in the area for the week, and might try to get someone to watch the boy for a day while I head over to Manchester with the Mrs. Equinox spa for her, Orvis sporting clays course for me. I haven't done their Manchester course yet, but I've been to Orvis' Sandonona range down in Millbrook, NY a bunch of times and it is absolutely top notch. I've got to imagine Manchester will be pretty nice too.

Okemo's mountain coaster over at Jackson Gore is pretty cool, but one run is like $25 for the driver, and $20 for a passenger.

I'm thinking of installing one of these in magic circle, you ever play? Pretty addictive. Maybe I double up the order and we ask about installing one in blt?

I'd be in for shooting, the wife would be too if it's a group kind of thing. I will see about bringing some toys

Rain has stopped. It's 35 degrees, down from 40 a couple of hours ago. I can see portions of Vertigo, Kinderspiel, Showoff, and Redline from the living room. I don't see anything but white. Very little meltage in the yard. The snow that fell Sunday into Monday is still in the driveway although it's a slushy mess. Although skiing may not be great for a while, I think it was less horrible than predicted.

Best possible news! Definitely a good time to join this thread that is already on the 3rd page!

Such an awesome opening weekend for so many reasons:

    1) Snow - so much and so good

    2) Friends - so many and so good - particular the Kokomas family who provided me with shelter Saturday night and an enjoyable evening sitting with the baby by the fire. And Magicsnowboard for giving my vehicle a little bump to free up the stuck e-brake so I could go home.

    3) New friends - in particular Harvey's new Magic blogger who jumped into the deep end of the Magic community. My 15ish year old boots blew out a cuff rivet while I was dancing a jig in the lodge for baby Kokomas. The blogger offered his old, barely used Langes since they are my size and he has no other use for them. Met up with him in Saratoga at Druthers for a beer and conversation, hopefully the first of many. Hope to be able to try them tomorrow.

It's going to be an awesome season!

And just for the record, I am an expert at absolutely nothing. The older I get, the more I realize how little I know.

Better news than I would have imagined, thanks for the update. It may make the drive up tomorrow morning a little less depressing.

Let me know if you're bringing toys. I have a few things that go pew pew that I could bring as well.

The donated ski boots seem to be fine. It will take a while to dial them in but it sure was good to be out yesterday. Spring conditions, good people, good times!

Honestly, why in the name of Hans would you EVER repeat this??? What the fuck is wrong with you, man?? Of course people fear the worst, but YOU need to know what to repeat and what not to- especially when we're trying so fucking hard to be positive and encourage people to come out. Thanks a lot man. Seriously. Way to go.

On lighter news, I can't believe how well Magic is skiing given the rain we just weathered. Holy shit talk about a festivus miracle! Red is still completely skiable as is black, Talisman is STILL caked with snow (all are icy/crusty and such, but still covered anyways) and the trails they did have skied fanfuckingtastically- there were a few bare spots though for sure tho, so here's to hoping that snowmaking this week goes well, and we get this snow this weekend- I know the boys are fired up to throw some flakes for sure!

Sure you could do the touristy stuff and go feed the overweight trout at Orvis for a couple of quarters but there's really more to VT than that, and you could do on the cheap.

Fortunately mud season is here early so the unpaved roads in the valley can be good for a bit of mudbogging. It's cheap fun if you don't need a tow. Then head over to Bardwell Farm to pet the goats and sample cheese. If the Leach's are butchering a cow that can be interesting. I never knew they pulled the whole hide off like that. By then its lunch time and you can stop at the Cilantro in town (if its open) or the hut next to the Sundowner where the Peruvian seasonal labor at Stratton stays. Its way cheaper than Gringo Jack's. While in Manchester ask the guys at EMS if they have anything in the store that says Made in the USA, they'll spend a good 1/2 hr looking for stuff and it's kinda funny to watch. By then its mid afternoon and you're ready to roll back up the big hill.

Or just post online a shitty snow report for magic. Grab some beers, a tuna sandwhich, head over to the base lodge and watch Doworks head explode because someone questioned Magics awesomeness.
