    old ipod question

what do you think this is worth, and is it worth getting?

Looking for girlguide, she uses a mac, just wants tunes for the car and to copy friends CD's to her computer.

"This iPod is a first generation 5GB power house mp3 player in perfect working order. It holds about 1,200 tunes and comes with black leather protective case ($35 U.S. value in itself) and firewire cable. The unit is in good condition with a clear, bright display and just a few scratches on the metallic backing (it's impossible to prevent minor blemishes on the mirror-like back of these first generation pods). The software (iTunes) to run it is built into MAC OS X, so there is no need to install anything. This is what plug and play is supposed to be! And this is a MAC only iPod for OS X MACs with a firewire port. This iPod will charge itself when connected to your firewire port. PC users cannot use this iPod unless they buy a MAC. I have run this unit without any problems. I will provide a set of generic standard headphones/earplugs or you may use any standard set of standard headphones (Sony walkman type will work fine) for this unit. The battery holds a good charge and you should know that fresh batteries are available for under $30 from from www.ipodbattery.com. I am selling to move up to an iPod photo. This unit will also function as a hard drive with gigabytes (depending on how many songs are on the drive) of storage to back up important data from your MAC. There is a lot info about using these features on apple's web site and around the internet. All bidders should contact me about shipping cost to their specific postal code. Rest assured the shipping cost will be reasonable and no more than the actual cost."

How much is the bidding so far? there's a lot of things to consider if you buy this old of an ipod. It can only connect via firewire, the battery life is going to be at 8 hours MAX(more likely, 60-70% of that). It will also be much more bulky than the current ipods. Honestly, depending on how much you're spending, you might be better off getting a newer ipod mini for 199. If she's a student(or a teacher) she can go through the "education" link and get a discount on the new stuff. If you have any questions, PM or IM me on AOL.

[geek]A Mac and a MAC are two totally different things.[/geek]

Other than that completely useless bit of info, I have nothing to add.

I had a friend do the battery replacvement thing and it totally worked. Even so, I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it. There's lots more parts to wear out on that old model, I still have mine and the headphone jack is crumbling and there is a grittiness to the scroll wheel that I have a feeling will lead to future failure.

I completely forgot about that. The mini would be a really good call.

[salespitch]I heart my 1Gb iPod shuffle. It's cute, I even made a cozy for it! I call it Twinkie. Anyway, yeah, it's tiny, its so light that I can take it skiing and it doesn't annoy me by bumping around too much. About the size of a car key, it holds 250 songs with 12h of battery life. With a student discount it cost me approx. $200CDN after tax, I can't say enough good things about it.[/salespitch]

    Believe.

All the replacement battery talk is highly supsicous. I still have my first gen, and it works fine (Though I sent it back to apple when I accidentally broke the HDD [hehe] and I think they just sent a replacement unit, so the battery etc. would have been replaced also). However, as said above, it might be the best bet to buy either a mini or a shuffle, as you're not likely to get the first gen of eBay for much less (esp. including shipping).

Agree with arty. get the mini. smaller, you can now get them in 6GB, better battery life, and has the scroll wheel.

    I love mine!
