DD, people that work with and train dogs for law enforcement and the military love their dogs. Any handler, loves their dog and the dog loves them. Unlike people, well trained dogs don't do or say stupid things. You could learn a lot from my well trade GSD,, like when to stay quiet. And ya, I love that dog. Certainly more than most people.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

oh so you dont have a problem with monetizing nazi war dogs? Using dogs to serve fascist agendas? Forcing and breeding dogs to attack people?

They're chattel, dogs are the property of their owners, to be used and trained as they see fit as long as those activities don't cross the line into cruelty. They're no different than donkeys or oxen or horses.

DD --we need to differentiate between the use and misuse of dogs. Is it any surprise that police who misuse their weapons and kill unarmed people also misuse dogs? Is it any surprise that police departments that have poorly trained officers also have poorly trained dogs? Is it any surprise that officers who abuse people abuse dogs? Is it any more wrong to send dogs to fight in an evil war than to send people? I don't see anything wrong with the use of dogs by military or police, if the police and military are behaving in any ethical manner--a huge if of course. I suspect that most police and military dogs, like most dogs, are a lot happier working and being with their handlers than lying around all day waiting for their owners to get home from work, like most dogs in America. (But not my Cocker--she'd rather lie around than anything.)

The only dogs I have experience with are my CHP neighbor's bomb detection dogs. His lab died shortly after she was retired and he was heartbroken. His current dog is a small GS raised and initially trained in Germany, still very much a puppy. Officer's wife sometimes forgets she has to give commands in German. I gather that the number of dogs who qualify for bomb, live victim, and body detection work is very small--for behavioral reasons.

Interesting about German shepherds--it seems that most I encounter these days are a lot less aggressive than the ones that were around when I was a kid. I get the impression that they are being bred now to have better dispositions than in the past and that other breeds have become more popular with people who want aggressive dogs, especially pit bulls obviously. And I never heard of a dog that was a Nazi or belonged to any other political party.

the purpose of dogs is the extension of human faculties for the common good,

as soon as you use a dog for selfish pursuits you have perverted the symbiotic relationship

using dogs as warhounds is disgusting

They're domesticated animals to do our bidding. It isn't disgusting to use a bolt gun to slaughter cows and pigs to eat, but it is to train and utilize dogs to their full capability? Domesticated animals don't deserve the same respect and dignity that those who have never been summoned by the siren song of humans do.

Digital death is right about the poor dogs used by the fascist police. No way those dogs are treated right.

Reading through some of the links in this thread it is amazing how many cop apologists are in the comment sections of news articles. wtf???

here's another great example of police force douchebaggery
creates fake crime scene and commits suicide after "extensive criminal acts"
    http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/04/us/fox...oe-gliniewicz/

The death of Fox Lake, Illinois, police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz was "a carefully staged suicide," Lake County Major Crimes Task Force commander George Filenko said Wednesday. "This staged suicide was the end result of extensive criminal acts that Gliniewicz had been committing."

Gliniewicz was under increasing levels of stress from scrutiny into what the investigators found to be criminal activity, Filenko said.

The officer had been stealing and laundering money from the police department program that mentored young people hoping to become law enforcement officers, Filenko said. Gliniewic was a leader in that program, and had been stealing money for at least seven years, he said.

The investigation found that the officer -- who had experience creating mock crime scenes -- staged his suicide to make it look like a homicide.

The investigation indicates at least two others were involved in criminal activity, though that inquiry is ongoing, and police are not commenting further on this angle for now, Filenko said.
