An off-duty Dallas police officer fatally shot a man after entering the wrong apartment in her building late Thursday, local officials and news reports indicate. The officer, whose name has not been released, has claimed that she mistakenly thought the apartment was her own, the Dallas Police Department said in a statement. The officer had just completed her shift at a nearby station and was still in uniform at the time of the shooting. The Dallas medical examiner identified the victim as 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean, a local NBC affiliate reported. The officer will be on leave while Dallas police and prosecutors are investigating the shooting, the department said.
