    Thumbs up Colo SAR Cards

    Just a friendly FYI/reminder-

As an option that is more redily available than the CORSAR card, any Colorado 2005 hunting or fishing license functions the same as a SAR card. Plus you can fish/hunt with your purchased card. Annual fishing = 20.25, Annual small game = 15.25, Annual combined = 30.25. And the DOW is funded by the purchase of licenses and IMVHO the do a pretty decent job and is a worthwhile State agency to support.

    More Info:

Those that don't know, CORSAR will cover the cost of SAR missions in the event you need rescuin' Doesn't cover medical.

Does the state still offer the CO. Hiking Certificate? i paid $5.00 for a 5-year card in 98 (now expired). I think this also offered SAR coverage w/out medical. do you know if this also covers BC skiing? tanks, mang.

rather than online I recommend hitting Eddie Bears north of 70. the only place you can get a haircut, pick up a 12 pack, fill your fuel tank, and outfit yourself with your weapon of choice...gun or fishing pole.

    a veritable one stop shop.

OK, I always hear this, but it is INCORRECT. The SAR card IS NOT INSURANCE! I encourage everyone to buy it (I have one) because the money goes into a fund that the local county rescue teams can use if they run out of funds after a big rescue. But after you buy it you can just leave it home, because it makes absolutely no difference in how you are treated.

You will be rescued, and you will not pay for it, regardless of wether you have the card or not. I don't think anyone in Colorado has payed for rescue so far. buying the card just contributes to the general fund to help out the rescue agencies, but it gives NO extra privilege to the card holder, except maybe good karma...

People have been charged. Some counties charge. Other counties charge when all funds are exhausted midyear (usually rare).

If you have the card the SAR team can apply for reimbursement from the state fund for the cost of the mission involving you.

If you don't have the card or equivelent (hunting license, fishing license, boat reg, snomobile reg, etc) then the SAR team has just been screwed out of any chance of recouping their costs from the state fund.

If not, they may look at you when it comes to not being able to operate properly because your mission exhausted the last of their operations budget.

If there is a vehicle recovery or property recovery, you also might be charged even by teams that do not charge.

Summit County Rescue Group has not charged anyone in many many years.

Not entirely true. That's classified as a Tier III reimbursement. A SAR team can apply for reimbursement, but only after Tier I and Tier II claims have been paid.

I stand corrected. But what are the chances of a Tier III reimbursement being paid?
