Interesting propsal/presentation at the ussws from Ben Prichett
I though it was spot on and needed or at the least a step in a better direction
anybody got a link or wanna paraphrase or cliffnote it better than i can?
    or got thoughts on it?

Did it involve a split between recreational and professional course tracks?

Probably a good idea. AIARE has been knocking on that door for a few years.

i'll give a shot at cliff noting it for ya dibs

basically it splits the recreational track and the professional track to be more relevant to each.
both start with an avalanche introduction (level 1). there will also be an 8 hr companion rescue course
    from there it splits:
    - recreational path will go two a more advanced course pertaining more to terrain selection, route finding, "now-casting" and the removal of the formal documentation SWAG work that is currently in the level 2
-professional path: re-named "avalanche technician" designed for patrollers, forecasters, dot/railway personnel, guides, etc. there will be perquisites to get into this course such as 3 documented seasons working in the industry and the 8 hr companion rescue course. there will also be continuing education components to keep this certification going. stage 2 of the pro path is an advanced avalanche technician course for higher level folks

i'm sure i'm missing multiple components to the proposal. each time i've heard it, its been tweaked a bit. work in progress for sure but a step in the right direction in my opinion. can be frustrating to see a current level 2 course with a huge gap in skill levels and reasons for being there.

i don't remember the 3 documented seasons being part of that professional side
and anyone should be able to enter that side for either personal or professional reasons imo
like anyone can get an oec or emt cert, regardless if you plan on using it profesionally

If anyone wants more information, pop me your email address in a PM and I can send you the pro-rec split white paper as of the AAA board meeting in October.

I think you need to have documented at least 60 days of work/travel in complex avy terrain to be eligible to enter the professional track, at least that sounds like what Ben was saying at the UAC shindig. He then went on and said something about that being the equivalent of 2-3 seasons of experience for most people, but I believe the proposed requirement would have to do with documented days, not years.
