    i need a fork

currently on an elsworth joker with a geriactric white bros. but want this new fork to possibly bridge between the joker and my next bike, which would be something bulitesque. thinking any new bike i get wont have much more than the six inches on the joker.

    light dhing, stunts, drops.
i'm seeking the cheepest options, used is great.
what do i want, and where do i find it?

    i'm 6-3, 200 lbs.

    thanks.

strong front-runners in the 6" category are:

    Fox 36
    Marz AM-1
    Marz Z-1

    check them on mtbr.com

there are people who like them but i don't hear much about them

most of the forks I listed are new this year and will be more pricey, you can probably find a Z-1 used or on sale from last year

Bas, I spun a few laps on a little step-down this weekend on my buddies Faith and he was running the Marzocchi 66RC on it. Big, burly single crown with 7" of squish. Not the cheapest out there, but a damn fine fork that handled my going a bit big and landing just passed the tranny.

I was just looking and if you get it from Go-Ride, they'll give you $100 credit and set the fork up to your specs before it leaves there door.

As for Manitou, maybe some of the peeps that are rockin' the ASX will chime in soon.

thanks cs. i'll scope out that 66RC. sounds like exactly what i'm looking for. super burl single or meduim burl double crown.

keep throwing out stuff for me to check out.
my bike knowledge fell off around the time the first shivers were being put out. so anything newer than that i would have no clue even existed.

Those are all sweet forks no doubt, but the Fox and AM-1 are way expensive. I think even Jenson USA is selling the Foxes above MSRP right now they are so hot. Think like $800 for the "lower" model and over $900 for the top end. The AM-1 is in the high $700s, too.

The Fox and the Z-1 are the ones leaning more toward freeridey stuff and would fit a future bigger bike better. The AM-1 is more long travel all around stuff. (Marzocchi is actually trying to start an industry fork categorization standard, part of which would tell you that the AM-1 should be doing very limited drops, etc.) If you are going to look at bigger blinging new forks, don't forget the Marz 66.

I don't have much experience with the Shermans at all, but a lot of the '04s seem to be on sale right now. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, and I've been looking at a couple to help my brother build up a hardtail with.
As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way.

Go single, that way you can do big x-ups. Like this guy: (the step-down, and the 66 in action)

i think they are just heavy. but the ride nice (it seemed after just playing around on my friends stinky w/ slider last season.

    Jr. T anyone?
i think i can get those pretty cheep. cheeper than the 66, about the same as the sherman

prolly not the reason i'd go single.
i'm used to a double, and like the stiffness, but i'm sick of ripping up ky knees on it.

    I have a Sherman Flick+ 2005 (150mm) which is treating me well. It's just over $400 from aebike, plus if you're over 150# you'll want a spring kit (I'm 190 and ride an x-firm).

The Flick+ is TPC, with adjustable compression and rebound (but no adjustable preload, thus the spring kit). I am a big non-fan of SPV.

The main difference between Marzocchi and everyone else is that most Marzocchi forks use open-bath damping, which effectively gives them an air spring (and they often have adjustable air pressure). This gives them a very progressive resistance curve, versus Manitou or Rock Shox which have more linear resistance. (I have no appreciable time on Fox forks so I can't judge them.) The feel is very different, and people tend to strongly prefer one or the other.

There are also advocates for the RS Pike, which from reports is the first RS product to not suck since the old Judy Race -- but I have no firsthand information.

I've got a Sherman Slider and love it. It's lighter than Marz DC's and as light as most Marz SC's. It's a bit of a different feel than a Marz, but it's super plush. If you're not going HUGE, it's a great light FR fork. I've had mine for 2 years and have had 0 problems. I ride the North Shore a lot. My 2 cents.

my take, if you go bomber get a Z-150 from last year with 6" of travel, or mani sherman firefly + with the 6". I would stay away from the 66's because the axle to crown would rake your jorker out too much and they're f'n logs when it comes to weight. I had a slider and it was nice and light and worked well. Depends on if you want a dual crown or not. I want a 36 but am having a hard time paying the price. Stay away from low end used boxxers and jr T's new/used. they ride crapy imo. You could hold out for the new manitou 8" single crown thats in the works. braaaaaap. and put it on a new sunday.

I rock one of those on my dirt jumper and I think it rocks. Although it makes a funky sound at times, mainly cause of me over jumping or really bashing the shit out of it. But it takes a beating and has no problem flying 15 feet in the air. And is definately light enough to xc if wanted. Taken it on a few long rides. I am only about 170 give or take a few, but have seen many other riders rocking those as well. Just stay away from the SL, not as beefy. I have it on an Ellsworth Specialist and I have thought about putting it on my Dare for some DH racing at times, cause it would work fine there too.

Try adding a little amount of oil to each side. Bombers never come with enough oil and are prone to the bottom out clank. This should help.
