Wyoming Chemical Engineering Car Won Regional Competition

    Caution: Mad engineering steeze ahead.....

Took first place, beat CSM, CSU, SDSM, and U of U. Anyone have some ideas for publicity here in wyoming?

If you want to see some videos of all the cars or explinations for the competition go here:

The UW PurpleHaze-J (named for the KMnO4 catalyst for hydrogen peroxide decomposition originally used to power it, and the jeep body code)

    go pokes!

Yeah? Well I bet my school can beat up your school...I mean...nice car!!

MTU CHEM-E CAR TAKES SECOND PLACE IN THE NATIONALS

Congrats on the comp, when is the national comp this year? I didn't find anything for how MTU did this year in the regional comp (if it's even occurred yet). Being the ChemE dork that I am, I'll have to follow this now. Would be kinda cool if our schools went head-to-head at nationals. With our hockey team in the proverbial shitter, this might be the only thing left going for my alma mater.

Thanks for the congrats bear! The national comp is in the fall somewhere in Ohio - i'll be gradgamicated by then but they are thinking about paying for my trip as an advisor on the team.

Looks like MTU's car was a fuel cell at nationals last year - $800 fuel cells cars with coorperate sponsors are for pussies. 120PSI pipe bombs moving at 10feet/second while spewing 30% H2O2 are where it's at

UW has no money, we built our gehtto car with PVC and things laying around for $50 in 9 days. Its heavy (15lbs), loud (sounds like a speed bike), and dirty (spews steam) but accurate (as in +or- 10 feet ).

I wonder if MTU has ever played UW hockey team - i will ask my buddies on the team.

I know a few people from MTU now that i think about it bear - do you know bob skogly or jimmy kebawlski (sp). We call him Jimmy K because no one knows how to spell his polish name. They graduated CheE awhile back and are working in western wyoming - they were my supervisors last year. Big time ski bums with alta/bird passes. They ski Atomic REX's. They ski around with a geologist. Forgot his name, but last year he had to buy a JH pass because he was on probation

Congrats! And yeah for the ChemE stoke on TGR - our AIChE never actually competed on this one, but it kinda looks fun.

And even more congrats on almost graduating - damn fine feeling to get through ChemE and come out on the other side

That’s 5 ChemEs on this board. 4 posted in this thread alone.

Perhaps not such weirdness, ChemEs are the most "well adjusted" of all the engineers.
At least that’s what we told ourselves back in college,
while in the undergrad lounge at 1 a.m.,
    doing unit ops lab homework,
    on a Friday night,
    sober as the pope.

    ^^^ LOL - true that!

only here at UW things are a little more lax - we drink our beer / irish coffee in the ChE Lounge - maybe some day the profs will figure out why we are so happy in class when they try to flavor their coffee with our irish wisk---i mean non-fat coffee creamer

Where did you goto school End Up? You in SLC too?

    Hey all you Chem E's....
I'm an IE, a recent grad of NC State University looking to get into medical/industrial/engineering sales or looking at a good opportunity at a particular business. I have great internship experience and I would love to come out west (Utah, Wy, Colorado, etc). PM me if you have any info or advice...Thanks!!

You went to the wrong school my man. While we had our share of sober ChemE's (we actually had one kid finish his degree before his 21 birthday...ridiculous) there were many of us that had mugs with "assorted beverages" with us in every plant design test (those exams were at night). Following the exams, our profs typically followed us to the bar and dropped their credit cards on the bar for our tabs. Never managed to take a test drunk, but then considering my final GPA, maybe I should have tried that...couldn't have hurt.

Its not uncommon for us to convince a prof to hold class at a local pub. My prof is holding a keg this sat. for the seniors and juniors, he does it at the end of every semester. Then at the AIChE keg we get all the profs and students together at the rock climbing gym here in laramie, drink beer, have an ice luge for shots, usually end up starting up some sort of huge fire.

Myself and more than a few of my fellow seniors have gone to class drunk more than once, never attempted a test...yet

edit Gaffy: ATK is looking for monster ammounts of engineers, a good friend of mine just got hired on there - they are looking at 100+ engineers. ATK is 30min from Brigham City Utah I belive, might have been working there myself if i hadn't accepted a job a few weeks before they made the announcement.

I belive they make the fuel and other things for NASA. Some of what they do is sales/customer support type things, might be up your alley. I can't imagine going to a school where there was enough interest for a IE degree, wtf does an IE do anyway? Is that like basic engineering with alot of econ tacked on or is it more mechanical?

Careful on this one. I've heard horror stories of ATK doing this. They hire a shit-load of engineers, only to get through the project and then let them go. Something to keep in mind.

    Good to know, thanks.

I told my friend something along those lines, although I had no history to base it on: Sounds like they just got a NASA grant to hire a shitload of people - so i told my friend to ask them what happens when the grant runs out and they said something to the effect of don't worry about it. Hurm.

Oh, I chose the right school. For beer quantity, and more importantly quality, CSU and Fort Collins is one of the best places in the world. Admittedly, early college sobriety was a poor choice on my part. However the situation was completely rectified by my second senior "lush" year.
I was just back there last weekend for a prof's graduation. It was like old times, the profs invite us out to the bars, and then pick up the tab, NICE.
