I'm not the aficionado that some of you guys apparently are but got into a pretty wide range of music during my college days in the 90's.
    311
    Jurassic 5
    Cake
    Chemical Bros
    Garbage
Foo Fighters (live show in Minneapolis with a sick Dave Grohl blew the co-billed act of RHCP out of the arena).
    NIN
Got into Live a bit too.

Toward the end of the 90's you could see the MTV influence of the cookie cutter music being produced in order to get on TRL type shows.

We have not one but 3 different "classic hip hop" radio stations here that have popped up within the last year. Saw an article over the holidays in the WSJ that this is the fastest growing format in radio.

Hip Hop went to shit after the 90s. Yes, Kanye and his ilk are over produced auto tune shit. Everything else seems to be no talent losers with more bling than brains.

^hahaa - agree but there's some good stuff if you search

ever hear of Ratking? nyc represent!!!

was listening to GZA "liquid swords" on this bus this am on the way to work...was thinking how 36 chambers & some of the solo projects are incredible...GZA, Meth, Ghostface, Raekwon

interesting fact I just found...To decide who appeared on each song, RZA forced the Wu-Tang rappers to battle with each other. This competition led to the track "Meth Vs. Chef", a battle between Method Man and Raekwon over the rights to rap over RZA's beat; this track was left off the Wu-Tang Clan's debut album but surfaced on Method Man's debut, Tical (1994).

not surprising and glad to hear it (no pun intended)

so much classic stuff that doesn't get recognized by most & I hope more & more people find out about it

on a side note, my son just started watching "Yo Gabba Gabba" and prior to that I decided to beatbox for him & he loved it so when he sees Biz Markie do it, he gets excited

90s is generally considered the 'golden' age of hiphop.

Anywhere from the transition era... 89-92 ish... looking at eric b. and rakim, etc...

The saturation of EC and WC rappers in the mid 90s, when it got some main stream play..
NWA to Snoop to Pac... on the WC
Nas, Wu, Mobb, Biggie, lords, etc on the EC

As much as I didn't like the narcissism in some of it, I loved the fact how the competition drove the MCs.

    Sure.. If you must

Dirty South started coming into it's own in the late 90s... sure there are some anomalies. .. outkast... who are just legendary at this point.

Lots of good 90s music here, brings me back to my long hair high school days.

    Don't forget:

    Hum - Stars
Down - Stone the Crow, Lifer - short lived Pantera side project
Filter - Hey Man Nice Shot, Dose or anything off Short Bus
Incubus - their first 2 albums, Fungus Amongus and S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

NWA "Straight Outta Compton" released 1988.

I remember buying the tape in Oregon when I was in ski camp. Played it non-stop and still just blows me away every time I listen to it now.

"You're about to witness the strength of street knowledge!!! "

Goodie Mob "Soul Food" released 1995. I forgot if I had even heard them before I bought the cd, but when I listened to it, I was glad I did. Classic.

And well said on Eric B & Rakim and Outkast.

have i mentioned how much I love hip-hop/rap?

Does that correlate to your poor reading comprehension?

Holy shit that had to have been one of the absolute best shows ever...! I was lucky enough to see both Nirvana and PJ in 2 small venues in college before they blew up... Kurt was one of the absolute best...

To this day music and my obsession for this band changed when I got to see TOOL live in support of their Undertow album... Maynard was completely lost in his music and never saw anything like that... Music and live shows are like a drug for me and this band and their show is second to none...

Still fucking pissed I never got a chance to see Rage before they split...

Saw Rage and Wu Tang at Blossom Music Center sometime in the summer of 1997. Awesome show. Rage rocked really hard. Only about 2/3 of Wu Tang showed up though which I guess was pretty common for the tour, something about them getting way too fucked up at the previous show and missing their own damn bus to the next one. It was still awesome.

After grunge took off, I kind of got sick of the scene. 90's were the golden age of alt-country. Uncle tupelo, old 97's, silos, jayhawks, golden smog, wilco, son volt, et al.

Also locally Burlington had a decent acid jazz scene with baby's nickel bag, viper house, belizbeha, and others.

Heh, I forgot how much I enjoyed the Jayhawks.

Was unfamiliar with Drive By Truckers until moving to ATL, seems they've got quite the following here, maybe I'll give em a go.

Day on the Green with Metallica, Faith No More and Soundgarden.
Too many more good shows from that era.
FNM is one of my top if not top live acts. Always put on such a great show. And yeah, lots of Primus shows at places like the Omni and the like. So good.
I went to that DOG and I actually still have that shirt. Sad, but I really like it. Don't have my DOG shirt from the Metallica show with Cliff.
I don't know about anybody else, but the thought of standing out all day at a festival is just not that appealing anymore unless I could lounge on a blanket for half the day. Fuck all that standing.

With a name like Undertow, I can see why.
I bought that album and liked it and then saw them on the side stage at Lollapalooza and holy shit. I was completely blown away and have been a huge Tool wonk ever since. Lot of good bands at those Lolly shows, always got turned on to at least one new band...didn't go to that Hole/Beck one though.
