Anyone been up and down Mt Tallac lately? I just wanted to check on snow coverage. Some people were looking at a summit and discussing what gear is most appropriate.
Someone once told me that I ski like a Scandinavian angel.

No, but conditions are dire. I'm guessing that you're going to dry hike for at least the first 1500' vertical feet. I did it last year in March because I was bored. (I've done it in good years as well.) Conditions were better than they are now (which isn't saying much), and we had to dry hike and bushwack the first 800-1000 vertical feet with our skis on our backs after walking the entirety of Spring Creek Rd. I'd probably bring hiking boots, put my skis and boots on your back, get an early start, and be ready to suffer for the first couple hours.

BTW, I'm not trying to discourage you. It's not like there are a ton of great options.

So I heard a rumor today, and not from a necessarily good source.
Anybody else hear Vail may be closing Kirkwood due to lack of revenue?

Why do you hate him so much? That's just mean. You should totally discourage him......if you had any inkling of humanity left.

This is a season for doing weird shit. Try skiing as many different ski resorts in the same day as possible? Sure. Sufferfest up Tallac for 10 minutes of mediocre skiing? Why not. Earlier in the season when we had that sweet 6" base, I did a few reverse-shuttle meadow-skippers from my house (7600') to the Rose Summit parking lot (8900') because the skinning was much better than the skiing.

I'm also in the market for some cheap 180-ish GS race skis, if anybody has any leads.

    What's that you say . . . I should get out on my bike? But, eh . . . you see . . . um, February . . . skiing . . . . [Sighs and lowers head in resignation.]

Well it looks like we might have some high elevation rain headed our way for a change of pace, at least we have that going for us

If true, I'd go into the deepest depression for a single human.

I talked to Coop a few weeks back about the current status of Kirkwood and I didn't get that vibe at all.

I couldn't see it happening without making a huge dent in future pass sales. Also given the current lack of snow in Cali it would be a disaster from a marketing standpoint to close the resort with the deepest pack. OTOH, it's Vail.

I don't think you have to worry. Vail closing Kirkwood would be an absolute PR nightmare and the negative perception would cost them way more money (in stock value) than they could possibly lose from running the place at a negative margin.

I agree--why would they shut down something they just bought? If you don't like it, don't buy it. I always thought that acquisition was part of a long game. As a ski business you have to be budgeting for climate change; which is why I figured they bought three resorts a) the resort with the most widespread snowmaking b) the resort with the highest elevation and c) the resort with the highest base.

I only got up to Tallac twice last year and because I hate bushwacking though that stuff both times it was to ski the sunny side in corn. It's a long day up the summer trailhead to the Cathedral area to get on snow. But it can be made easier, by biking past the gate closure, stashing the bike at the trailhead, hike in with shoes, then stash them once you hit the snow line.

Provided conditions are good/safe for skining you can skin right up the south ramp, here is an instructional video.

    Hahahah. Touche, Granjero.

Though, the huge bullseye sitting right above Oroville is at least helpful for the State Water Project and the state's water problems.

I could see MTN closing the Kirkwood season early. It's a diminishing return after Presidents day and will be difficult to expand operations in March. I doubt they would close permanently and write off the investment before it is depreciated.

The HOA at Kirkwood is run by some very wealthy and smart individuals. There's no way MTN could permanently close the lifts. There has to be contingency for HOA.

While a cool idea, the concept of skinning uphill while skiers are coming down holds zero appeal to me...

Interesting. A bunch of the EC crowd on here are involved with Magic.

I like the idea. Curious what it does to their traffic numbers.

And I'm not into everything you like to do either. That's fine.

So... if you have to pick one day... I'm thinking it's going to be Monday at Kirkwood. Maybe Tuesday if the second wave comes in on the later side? Right?

Depending on the exact location of the jet, Rose might be a better call. AR events are often super location-dependent. Check it:

Edit- Note that it does say "Thursday-Friday," but the general point still stands.

It might be your last chance to ski unconsolidated snow this winter and you wouldn't want to miss out on that, would you? Go both days.
