If all they will feed us is corn, thats all we can eat. Today was fun, slushy corn turns on a freshly waxed board was surprisingly awesome.

Just wait till next weekend. Gonna hit 75 down on the coast. Creamy corn coming your way. If it does not all melt away.

I don't typically choose to eat corn in January, but yes, It's going to keep getting worse. I was in this same area two weeks ago and there was noticeably more coverage. Get 'er till she's gone!

Oh man, they are going to have NO problem telling where it is on sonora pass! They're stoked!

When are they coming through here? I'll bring them some fat bikes.

Too late, they crossed Sonora Pass on the 18th

"We made it to Highway 108 today for our resupply. 1018 miles to go now. Almost under a thousand! The skiing has been variable with conditions changing by the minute. It looks like we have a good weather window to continue into the High Sierras. Onward into Yosemite tomorrow!"

Monitor Pass open. Ebbett's pass open. Ski areas closing.

But...great ice for skating and hockey. Caples, Echo, Crowley, Lundy.... Prosser and Boca hopefully back in business soon.

Does the PCT hike count as a winter trek this year? Should at least have some asterisks next to it. I wonder if the hikers are bummed or enjoying it.

Ebbett's pass is closed for the winter according to caltrans. I can't imagine them reopening it before spring for any reason.

I hate looking at models over a week out but I got my fingers crossed the first week of February turns out remotely close to what one gfs model is showing. Not too far out. I actually remember one of our last 2 big winters where we had 5 straight weeks of sun from the end of December through January before it puked nonstop the rest of the winter.

I'm thinking about going out and exploring some lines off a mountain just south of Winemmuca this weekend just for something to do. There's enough snow to ski it (I drove by it a couple days ago) although it's thin and most likely not very good snow but it's something to do I guess. I have no motivation to explore around here or the eastside for that matter. I was in Sandpoint this weekend and was planning on riding Sunday morning on what should have been a powder day. It dumped 10" at the resort that night right before it decided to rain to the top of the mountain. I drove up and it was 1 degree colder 3k feet above town. Total saturated slop. I decided it wasn't worth $72 or free for that matter.

IMHO they have been lucky weather wise, they have some pretty long stretches without resupply and a big extended stormy period with deep ass powder snow could quickly become a not so good situation. They are hiking, snowshoeing and skiing, its a pretty impressive feat (but certainly would have been interesting in a normal snow year) and now looks like they will pull it off. One of the guys I think is a troller out of Sugar Bowl.

2011. 7" between Jan 1 and Feb 14 (of course it was on a better base than what we have now). 447" between Feb 15 and March 31.

The best part was, by the second half of March there were barely any lines even on a powder day. It feels like forever ago. Now when it actually snows there's a ton of anxiety to get after it immediately.

Better check the details on that storm roughly a week out.
The Sierra weather patterns are so effed that this one is coming out of the south, looking more like the rare summer storm and very warm.
On the upside, if we did get a heavy second half we could have a clean slate to start with in many places

Ebbetts may be closed per the website but the current conditions sign at 50/89 says it's open. Maybe it's open only to locals. No doubt they will close it again at a drop of snow and they don't want people planning a trip over it. Or maybe they were just joking. Those highway maintenance guys, always up for a good one.

He was talking about the one after that.
Over the last few days the GFS has been showing a system moving up from the South next week. It almost looks like a tropical system would moving up in the Summer or Fall. The European model runs started to hint at it yesterday and were showing it today. If this low moves up from the South we could see some rain next Tuesday and Wednesday. Not an exciting event since it is a warm system, but at this point we will take any moisture falling from the sky.

The ensembles are still hinting at a possible trough pushing into the West Coast to start February. Seeing a potential for blocking in the upper lats over the top, so maybe we could see some storms push further South. Still far away right now but we should have a better idea this time next week.

As desperate as I am, I've learned to ignore pretty much everything more than 5-6 days out. Lets hope the hint turns into a big punch in the face.

Is the fire road to silver peak completely bare? Trying to do a quick tour more for exercise than actual turns on Sun and need to drop off/pick up someone at Squaw in the AM/afternoon so was hoping to stay close. Thanks.

plan on filling your days with activities other than skiing. tour the eastside if you've never been, or other spots. lots to see and do....just little on snow..you can find some, and there might even be patches of nice corn for an hour.....

yep, what Baaahb said. Take the 395 south. Go all the way down to Bishop. Lots of stuff to see and do. Plenty of climbing. Mammoth actually has a lot of man made snow covered terrain open

    It wont be a bust
