Sun had a huge effect on the snow quality at the bowl overnight, basically anything that was in the sun past maybe 11 AM yesterday now has a crust on it. Areas that were shaded for the latter half of the day yesterday are still riding great. Coverage is very good and pretty deep just got to remember in some places there was no base to start with. Crust was softening and breakable when I left at 10:30.

    That's "officially." Doesn't mean they'll enforce it.
That's why I'm asking. Pretty sure it wasn't an avy death, I think she just hit a rock during pre-opening low tide and hit her head.

Sorry. You're right. For some reason I was thinking that a pocket ripped and dragged her over stuff, but my memory sucks.

But yeah, can't find the info online now, but like I said, the policy was officially changed to "closed" after that incident. Sounds like nobody really cares to enforce it (time passes, mountain ops folks who may be around are not PR folks, etc.), but I suspect it allows them additional discretion to have somebody cited for trespass to the permit area if the person does something stupid and they want them kicked/taught a lesson.

Thought that was your truck. We couldn't pass up the sisters zone. Figured eback already had your tracks from yesterday in it and lots of room out by round top. It was not disappointing

At Kirkwood and surfing the slush. There is so much of it. Tonight is their Avi Dog fundraiser. Might go for a bit if anyone is into it. Then race back to hot the tub and dinner for an early night. Click image for larger version.

while out touring at round top the other day, my dog sniffed out some kind-a-mountain chicken burrowed under the snow. The skin track went right on top of the poor bird.

Anyone know what kind of bird this was and if it's usual for them to do that?

The snow wasn't disturbed around it, looked like when it started snowing the bird just stopped moving and let the snow cover it.

Yes, the bird was still alive.

    yep

    totally normal

Occasionally we get ducks that are grounded by storms that the groomers find in the snow. Mtn manager put one in the top patrol shack one night and I found it the next morning. He came in the back door and I didn't see tracks in the snow. Scared the crap outta me!

I heard about two pretty major injuries that day. One skier hit a line in the Palisades and blew up on the reverse traverse, and another was hurt badly somewhere in Shirley. I assume JA was one of those.

Some of the lines on Palisades I've stood over, looked at the drop in... the run down... and the air at the bottom... and could picture all of that, but the various traverse tracks below that you'd be approaching with a ton of speed were the most intimidating of all. I kind of wish they'd close off the traverse lines from Sibo so they had to go a little bit lower and there'd be more room on the run-out to slow down. It's definitely more dangerous.

The reverse traverse track is part of the palisades take it or leave it. Its what separates the boys from the other boys who like to claim they are "big mountain" resort skiers. If one cannot handle a few cuts after 100 vertical ft of steep skiing/straight lining then they probably won't fair so well in the mogul field below.

In other news, sledding upto relay is not very possible/fun unless you like running your machine up dirt, rock and the occational patch of snow for a few hundred meters. I opted for a more weather apropriate outing of a nice bike ride in shorts.

Fair enough. I just wonder if the traverse lines were a bit lower if they'd open the Palisades a bit more often than they do. But whatever, I suppose you're right. I'm not claiming anything - I've only skied the two easier lines from up there (National and Main) and was just saying the run-out makes it all way more intimidating and I've witnessed a number of injuries because of it. When someone breaks their back/neck it definitely makes you reconsider things.

The traverse tracks were particularly heinous on Wednesday. More of a wild ride than the usual run out.

I'm certainly no expert--I've skied National a few times and Main at high tide making turns, but reverse traverse was never an issue, since Headwall was open and the traverse track was minimal or non existent. The tracks I saw coming out of Palisades Wednesday all made sweeping turns before reaching RT which was a virtual cat track. I didn't see the accident.

Ya usually the traverse cut isnt as bad as it is now. However Id say the reverse traverse takes priority to the palisades seeing as it is the main access to allot more terrain than a small cliff band which people treat like the holy grail of resort skiing in Tahoe. The palisades is more of a 'gym' than a gem with too much hype for what it is, a few straight lines, some big airs and a micro amount of steep skiing. Its got history sure but its not the 90's anymore and skiing has progressed so much further than 2 second straight lines with heinous runouts.

^^^truth. I admire the balls needed to point it, but learn to make some turns. And get off my lawn.
