While 9K is an improvement, and already accessible via leg power, from a business security standpoint I'm thinking 10K. The point being, the long term future of lift assisted skiing in the Tahoe region is not exactly rosy, and there's little that can be done about it.
The good news? I'll be nothing more than ashes blowing in the wind long before it becomes terminal.
I really don't want these free Sugar Bowl tickets to go to waste.... no one wants them? At this point I'd take a nice sixer or case of beer for the two vouchers....
thanks to meter-man for posting that ksl deal. i wonder if i can use my SB pass to buy my wife a day tix.
tahoe areas can have those plastic runs like they have in the mother country.
i am all for (and tend to personally focus on) human-powered recreation. i want the economy in tahoe and the sierra (including the winter-base economy) to be sustained and improved. concessions and compromises are going to need to be made regarding the balance of economic and natural resource sustainability of the tahoe area. is it "worthwhile" to develop on more of the higher peaks? what about into or immediately adjacent to the high peaks in the wilderness areas. is this being openly discussed by decisionmakers and chambers of commerce? people need to starting planning and acting now or it's going to suck more than it needs to. an example of not attending to the issue, CTC and SNC are completely mute on the subject of climate change and addressing its effects with their current water bond grant $$'s.
for some reason, this makes me reflect back to D. Brower's quest to not have the Sierra developed like the alps....
WTF are you talking about? I don't post here but this is beyond laughable. Suspose we do get into long term weather change. Industry will adjust or go out of business, ski areas will spend more time and money preping the slopes during the off season for low snow base and will put in more snow making. So, resort skiers learn to love skiing low angle groomers or quit. IMO, bottomline, get some diversity, ride your bike more on the new trails, travel more to better ski destinations and get some touring gear. All this means you will spend more $$ and help the economy............ We got no choice or move...........
^^^ in other words, "let others deal with this because i have no children and will be dead in 10 years."
btw, traveling to better ski destinations would not directly help the tahoe economy.... and getting some touring gear does not = boosting the tahoe economy.

I would rather like that new SN ipa.
So your plan is to diversify the tahoe winter economy and base it on retail sales of bikes and ski touring gear? Thats an idea. Based on my experience in the world of retail, im not sure its viable.
We are singular people and both have minimal importance in decision-making in the tahoe area. We play there and enjoy lots of time there but don't live there. My point is that i don't see important peeps talking about this getting the various stakeholders to become engaged in coming up with some feasible ideas. Maybe im wrong and those conversations are happening in public.....
No other peaks in Tahoe are getting developed, ever, unless they are adjacent to an existing resort... and even then, probably not. Seriously - how many new ski resorts in the entire country have opened up in the past 20 years? 2? And I don't mean for environmental reasons. No investor or bank would ever back it.
I heard at Squaw today they'll likely close for the season on March 29th. Seems legit based on coverage (or lack thereof). So everyone get your skins ready for the huge storm in early April.
^^^damn. Can't even keep Shirley going. KW still aiming for 4/19, and claim TC till Easter.
While many of them reside in wilderness, KW is in a geographic position to expand and keep lifts about 8500k. It would totally change the place, but even the proposed Sentinel lift would be a big improvement for spring (or new winter) skiing.
And besides, this is a stoke thread. Not a contemplate the future of Tahoe thread. There is another on for for that.
Shirley was actually just fine... they probably could keep it going until Easter, especially if we get a few inches Sunday/Monday to at least give the groomer crew a little something to work with. Siberia was still skiing okay in places too. The run-out from the Palisades was relatively soft and edgeable but they never opened the hike - I was hoping to at least get a lap in on National or Mainline Pocket but no dice. All things considered, the condition of mountain run is somewhat impressive but not sure how long it has left.

Kirkwood's putting some real effort into this staying open business. This afternoon, they had the winchcat on top of 2, pulling snow up from Whiskey. The traverse to the backside looks better than last week. Maybe VR isn't all evil. They are definitely trying to make the best of poor snow conditions.
Sure hope it snows soon. Is squawlpine really quitting on the 29th? BV says they're aiming for the 12th.

Does anyone know if there's ever been a year beside this where caples didn't completely freeze?

I'm not sure I believe the March 29th closure - that's coming up pretty fast. To be fair, I heard it was being re-evaluated as an option depending on how things go... so not exactly the most reliable intel - I should have mentioned that part. But I did hear it from two different people who would have better knowledge of such things than myself.
Not to mention: the Mothership classic is scheduled for the 30th. (nevermind, looks like that's at Alpine this year, I guess they should rename it The Summit 6 Classic).

I was back there on Thursday. Can't imagine how it could have been much worse. But, yeah, the resort is putting in a solid effort to keep 4 and TC going. Hope it is all still there a week from now. I head back up with the whole family for the weekend, then a few days with just my boy the following week. If they do keep going until the 19th, I might try to make a closing day appearance. For as burnt out the hill is, I had a lot of fun there on Thursday, including one of the best set of corn runs on Pali that I have ever had. The exit was interesting, but that corn was smooth. Not too many venturing out that far. Bolymaker was also fantastic, and who does not enjoy some slush bumps...
East facing slopes had really nice corn, north facing stuff stayed locked up today

Makes me want to speed up my fat bike purchase.
Supposedly there is some snow coming (probably a cm). Hopeful but about ready to take off the snow tires.
If your doing blow those are some deep lines.
Fkna rode van sickle yesterday and went to the hot springs today. I'm a pussy and walked across the east carson rather than drive the truck across it. I was surprised at how low the flow rate was for this time of year. Good for floating albeit a little chilly.
