From Sugar Bowl on Saturday, it looked bone dry - you could probably drive to Rose faster than you could hike to anything worth skiing.

Shaded north facing trees off the ridge between Sugar Bowl and the Benson hut still had great snow on Saturday, somehow, although it rapidly turned to no snow as you descended. Very odd skiing soft fluffy powder so close to dirt patches and running creeks.

Actually, Shasta coverage is pretty damn awesome, so there's that. I'd rather drive to ski Shasta (or transition to non-snow sports) than ski patches.
    You are very wise.

I'm heading up this weekend, mainly to resort-ski Rose which I know will be OK, but I'm hoping I can at least do some kind of sliding-on-snow if I get up there early enough Friday.
On Sunday the trail was skinnable from a hundred yards or so above the gate, with a few gaps on the way up -- which are probably more and longer by now. High southern faces are burnt pretty much to the ground. Stretches of decent coverage on other aspects.

Thanks guys, sounds like it's only somewhat worse than late Feb, when it was a nice enough walk-in-the-park trail leading to a handful of not-bad east facing turns. With expectations properly lowered, I may check it out on the way up to Truckee. This season, Castle Pass has become the snow equivalent of the local jogging trail, nothing special, but hey it's a place to go.

True about Shasta. Also, my mountain-biking season never really ended this year anyway.

Well put! Considering we are still "base building" in mid March.

    New England stole our base.

Waiting to hear how the day was to decide on skiing tomorrow and Friday.
Maybe the top half of Heavenly will catch something less snainy.

Not good - looking at the Mt. Rose cams, everything pretty much turned to rain.

Didn't rain at all at Bear Valley today. Light snow all morning, 2-3 inches of heavy pow on a firm base, some good skiing. Nice to feel a taste of winter.

Well, this has the potential to be a lot of fun. Assuming, of course, KT is still open on March 30.

50% off sale at Start Haus, except 20% on race skis.

I was wondering where they plan to run the (traditionally top to bottom of KT) Chinese Downhill for the PMS this weekend.

Anyone have some recommendations for some roads or trails that are steep but smooth around Meyers? Looking for a place for power hikes to stay in shape while I'm banged up, and have to avoid things that could twist my foot. So far I've been doing Old Meyer's grade, but something a little steeper or just variety would be nice.

Oneidas should be ok. It's flat for the first mile then gets steeper. The first mile is currently dry and I would think another mile or so should be in the next couple days. Also South Upper Truckee after the bridge

Let's see--rain and a couple of inches of wet snow high, then hard freeze last night and a serious east wind. should make for a fine day on the slopes.
Lynn Hill talking at Squaw tonight though,

Edit--things were a lot softer than I expected. Guess the cold was not cold enough or came to late to really freeze stuff. The wind was interesting.
