So a buddy and I loaded up Friday February 27th and made the 16 hour trek to Wolf Creek CO for a week. We had planned on skiing Taos as well but reports of Katchina lift not spining and a Post to Facebook from the Taos Marketing department advising people that they should consider skiing other resorts in Northern New Mexico as they were at 100% capacity and had Zero Parking Left. We ended up skiing 4 days at Wolf Creek and knocking off a bunch of their hike to terrain until it shut down for avy control. I Think everyday we woke up to about 12+ inches of fresh over night or since the lifts had closed the previous day.

We got on the standby list for Silverton Thursday March 5th and per their operations dept they have a good track record of getting people up. After seeing a few people put their beacons on over their outer most layer we both thought that we would be able to join a group after they took a lap or two. But other than 1 (one pump chump, Guy even called himself that) no one else bailed by noon that day and we decided to hit the road and head back to Tahoe and get home to our wives.

Reading everyone's TR's and looking at pictures I occasionally got envious that Tahoe was getting the goods while we drove 1000 miles to chase a storm that never really delivered the 100 inches that NOAA had foretasted. So Yesterday a I headed out to CPSR to check out Cresent moon with a buddy. Skining was decent the whole way to the apron but once we bootpacked 30-40 feet up there was every type of snow possible in it so we bailed on it. Per Powdorks Wind Fuckage verbage I would like to share a video on just how fucked things got within a short distance. Decent skiing up till about 1:15 but then I take a nice slide.

That's really strange about Taos being at "Full Capacity". That never happens there, maybe due to the Freeride Tour?

Regarding the vid, you need to lock out your toe. Dynafiddle strikes again.

The line i skied last tuesday on castle peak is now burnt out.

Sugarbowl is playing it storm by storm. If they get a rain event rather than snow, they'll likely stop for the season.

No kidding - the ski was barely torqued when it released. I know you tech guys kick the shit out of me on the uphill... but there are times I appreciate my heavy-ass Guardians.

Virginia Lakes. Dust on talus. Snow was great but sharks lurking everywhere. Core shots were abundant.

Curious PBR, do you knock you skis together when booting up to test the pin alignment? That release looks a touch pre mature.

That was definitely a pre release. I usually move the boot as if I were hiking and hope that the little cutters remove any excess snow I didn't remove with my pole tips. (If I totally click out to rip skins). I don't usually ski with walk mode engaged as I've torn my acl & mcl before and it's not a fun recovery

Seriously considering not even getting a pass next year, think I got 3 2 hour sessions on mine this year.

You know its a crap snow year when you randomly come across one of your back country ski partners getting down on the brown pow of Santa Cruz over the weekend.

Yesterday was good times at the Wood...gorgeous weather, pockets of pow, slush bumps, some cliffs, and laps with my kids. 'All the way' off the Wall yielded the best snow for the longest run for me. Lightning past Rabbits was a mix of perfect corn and some untracked pow. The top of the Wall is scary icy, but then once you get below the entrance it gets much better. Did I mention the weather was perfect? I'll be working on a vid from Wed & Sunday to show you what I mean.

Banzai start on the Wall...I didn't have patience to watch the race as I was having fun...SKIING!!

Groomers late in the day were smooooth. Here's Conestoga at around 3pm...

Ah, so they didn't start the Banzai with a drop in from the Wall after all. That was going to be some serious carnage.

My buddy living in Queenstown, New Zealand gave me that same t-shirt over Christmas. I've been wearing every trip to Tahoe this year.

Gimpy we skied black peak - the large e/ne bowl. North side of black looked thin but doable. North side of black to excelsior sounds like a rad tour.

South peak had tons of tracks so presumably the best coverage down there.

Sis and hubs heading to tahoe w SIX kids this week for a few days.
They got a place near Homewood, told them they'd have to drive to get to a resort.
Anyone have any squawalpine tix advice? As you can imagine it's gonna be expensive w that many ppl.
Can I get them a discount? My son and I have bronze passes.

    Thanks!

Yeah j if not for getting the kids out i wouldn't bother getting a resort pass. Back in the day when it actually snowed below 8k it was worth it but in this day and age.....?????

Doc - did U get a look at the n side of black? Or just the ne bowl?

N side of black was quite thin but it looked like it went top to bottom. Top was pretty wind hammered.

$25 days??? Surely you jest. They did have discounted days but they have already passed. Heavenly's prices were reduced to $95, Kirkwood's to $80, and Northstar's to $102. At least that was the plan earlier in the winter

Rose tix benefiting Sierra Avy Center are $35 for the Mar 21-22 weekend, and Rose will actually still have decent snow coverage then unlike a few places I could mention. (Uh, google it; I'm still too much of a JONG for them to let me link to anything)

Pretty damn bleak out there. That shot in the eastside topic of Ellery is unbelievably sad; that's usually nice well into May. And Virginia Lakes, another prime late-Spring spot, already marginal, they say.

So how bad is Castle Peak trail? Are any of the Andesite corn slopes still covered? Is there something resembling snow on the trail at least from the gate or so upward? I'm heading up this weekend, mainly to resort-ski Rose which I know will be OK, but I'm hoping I can at least do some kind of sliding-on-snow if I get up there early enough Friday.

Still does. It just melts 12 hours later when it's 60 degrees.

I have a total of 2 touring days in this year. Fuck. I guess early summer patch skiing starts next week, though, so there's that.

^^^ Or climbing season. Or Downieville season. Or...

Actually, Shasta coverage is pretty damn awesome, so there's that. I'd rather drive to ski Shasta (or transition to non-snow sports) than ski patches.
