Thanx court
I'm thinkin bout a Wednesday daytrip when it should be warm enough to soften
As others have noted, it was surprisingly decent out around Andesite. Nothing to rave about, but I had a hankering to get out and tour, and it was great to be out there. Nice corn-ish mid-week as long as we stayed out of the trees, changing to hard unbreakable crust Sunday. From the ski route/ snowmobile route split where the topo map sign is, it's still continuous snow on the Castle Pass trunk route, albeit with one detour.
Rose (resort) was quite nice Thu-Fri. Great coverage, considering, enough for a bit of (kind of nasty) tree skiing. Groomers & bumps were nothing special, but the usual ski resort funtime. Pretty much all the main runs have solid coverage, with some avoidable rocks poking out on a couple of bumps runs. A few of the Chutes runs were open, but ugh, one Chutes run was enough, more than enough; Chutes area is harder and crustier than everything else, which is saying something.

Sooo... looks like it's gonna snow (a bit) over the weekend, any take on what would be the best day to get out? Go after it in the weekend or wait till the beginning of next week?
As of now there's no obvious single day to pick. Skiing should be decent any day Saturday through next Thursday if the current forecast holds, but there's still some disagreement between models. Probably some dust on crust patches towards the beginning and hopefully pretty soft most places by the end.
Haven't been to Sugar Bowl in...months...any beta on conditions up there? How are the hikes? (I know Donner Peak is not in.) Webcams look about the same as everywhere else, but thinking this Sunday might be worth a visit.
Not going to lie, pretty excited at the fact snow is in the forecast. Even if it ends up being on the lower end, some cold air and a little snow will get me to stop mountain biking and planning spring and summer trips. I'll probably be in the Rose area this weekend into next week poking around. Ridge builds again until mid March, time to get after it as the season fades away (even though it's already pretty faded). I do have my two tickets to Sugar Bowl that haven't been used yet...I'll be watching the storm closely because damn, I miss that place.
On a side note, I'm looking to sell a few things before I take off at the end of April. Anyone need a pair (or just one) of 12'1" Laird Surftech Soft Top SUP's? I have two of them I'm looking to unload as I won't have any use for them after April. Great boards, definitely well used but paddle great and are perfect for taking the dogs out on the lake/loaner or spare boards. My lady and I enjoyed them and hoping we can find new owners. We've even surfed on them in Santa Cruz this one time... it was a scene. I've also got a 1st gen BCA float 30 pack I need to sell (see Gear Swap). PM me for details. Wiling to let the SUPs go for a pretty good deal.
Skied most of the sidecountry last week. Judah Bowl is skiable from near the top but it's low tide through the trees, I had to hike for a bit to get through them (this was Saturday, it was better earlier in the week). The east side is better if you have a touring setup, goes from either Lincoln or Judah, the usual Roller Pass skintrack is burned out but the north one to the microwave reflector is good. Didn't ski ASI/Poop Chute (too firm) but it looked like there was enough snow to go. Old snow is going to be rock hard with the temps so it's a matter of how much of a reset we get.
Ok, so I took an offer to go to Truckee with a group of friends and they were planning to go to Northstar... from the looks of it this place seems really mediocre, should I try to convince them to hit up another resort nearby (this is my first time skiing in Tahoe, so I don't really have a clue what would be better)?
After the storm or before? Northstar has decent coverage, great parks, and good groomers. But if you want to hit fun open bowls, ski powder, and jump off stuff in an alpine environment it's probably not the place for you. Alpine Squaw or Sugar Bowl would be the choice for those things.

Backside of Northstar (Lookout Mountain) actually has some pretty good tree skiing, especially on pow days. Don't know about coverage right now though.
If it's the first day of the storm it may not be a bad option, because lower angle stuff may actually be more fun given the boilerplate underneath. So... it depends what day. But generally speaking, Squaw, Alpine and Sugar Bowl are better options most of the time... unless it's really windy, in which case Northstar will still be running lifts when the upper mountains elsewhere are closed.
The trees off Lookout still have a LONG way to go. Need at least 3-4 feet of snow, probably more.
...
Anyone else planning to be at Kirkwood on Saturday?
I'll be skiing on saturday or Sunday, depending on what I agree to with my wife![]()
Is it snowing yet?
I might be at KW Sat or Sun. Watching the weather before I.
decide. My ass still hurts and don't really want to be riding dust on crust.
Search my posts. A few years ago my wife asked me to come clean about I really mean by "skiing in the back country".
This gives new meaning to going deep in the back country.
I love my family. Kids are the best.
