Didn't go over to RT, it was pretty windy in exposed areas. - but I can echo what others have said in that the pack is deeper now, there seems to be new snow below the bulletproof rain crust, which had about 6" of well-adhered heavy windblown on top of it everywhere I went between 8-9000'. Didn't go above 9000'.

Gold coast had chair issues and closed stranding everyone over there around 1ish?. Great turns all over the place upper mtn. Patrol was talking about sibo, but never spun, however you could hike up there and ski. No reverse traverse. Light towers c2 etc will be awesome in the morning. Get it!

Dammit my skis will not be mounted till wednesday... I might be tempted to drive out (from Palo Alto) for a day on thursday, what place do you guys think should still have the best conditions by then, after summer arrives tomorrow? Will Alpine be my best bet? It's been quiet about KW, did they somehow miss out? If anyone wants to show me around, that would be awesome

Not Alpine unless hikes are open IMO.

KW states 12-18" over the span of both storms. Reports suggest bumps filled in. I'd assume similar to else where. Smooth, buttery type of stuff. Don't think anywhere is skiing deep.

Pretty sure a few people were out at KW based on posts. Shakeknees seemed to ski above Red Lake (guessing there).

Are you getting tour bindings set up? Side country could be in good powcorn shape by them.

Go somewhere high, hope for a good refreeze and follow the sun (or stay away from it). Other than that I don't see how it matters much.

Best day of the season so far at Squaw. Everything up top is open.

No touring bindings unfortunately, but I'm a ridiculously keen bootpacker
I'd be very happy skiing smooth buttery stuff, good spring conditions are way better than shitty winter conditions imo.

What's the deal with 'the hikes' at Alpine? They close the hike-to inbounds terrain? Why do they typically close/open?

Anyone finds an OG moment jag shark (red top sheet) solo ski around the bottom of Olympic coming into 6 at KW let me know - easy to ID as their isn't a binding on the ski anymore but if you look were a binding should be it will have a ripped out hammerhead pattern. How the fuck can I lose a ski on the side of a groomer with minimal snow. Fuckin tele's! Riding some skinny bitches the rest of the day

Kwood is pretty good today. Lots of fresh can still be found which does not suck.

report from mid-january was that the road to Bowman Lake was snowfree from hwy 20 and there was one icey spot blocking access to jackson meadows (not sure if this is via 89 or bowman lake. i'm not sure whether the roads are gated, also not sure about the other jeep trails out there. i'm sure there's some snow on those roads now, but probably not for long based on the forecast.

The hike through keyhole to High Yellow and Our Father was open yesterday and today. High Beaver opened today after patrol shoveled a track through the boiler plate crust on the steep part of the traverse. Patrol i talked to said no Estelle due to no exit, but I wonder--the Beaver exit had more snow than it did last year when we skied a lot of corn in Beaver and Estelle in March--really no problem. We'll see. I haven't seen what Sherwood looks like now but based on what it looked like when it closed weeks of sun and rain ago I can't imagine High T unless we get 2- 3 feet of snow to the bottom.

They will close during heavy snow fall, when avi danger is difficult it mitigate. They will remain closed until they are safe from avi danger, and patrol determines they are safe to open up. They will close in spring is there is no overnight freeze, especially if there are big hanging cornices. Or if it gets too warm in spring and the corn might get ruts in it. Basically. They may remain closed due to other hazards, such as no snow in the exit.

Good luck. But yeah, how do you lose a ski in heavy snow? How far can it go? If you were going fast when it ripped out, check further down hill, in the gully. Sometimes a ski w/o a break can travel pretty far under snow, especially if it has no binding at all.

But then again, spring melt and winter melt are different, due to sun angle mostly. Also a growing snow pack and depleting snow pack can look different. If I recall right, Estelles's exit has a lot of boulders, drainage ditches and brush, all of which take a lot of snow to fill in, but from Beaver you can still take a hard right at the bench to avoid that mess.

My next window is from next Saturday through Friday morning. Not really looking all that exciting, as right now it looks to cool off a bit by then, with no new snow. Mmm. Anyone have an idea of where there could be decent skiing within driving distance? Maybe Lassen/Shasta? Rubies? Utah? Wyoming? Where did it not rain and remain cold? Or do I just ski the same 14 mile stretch of road next week?

Sugar bowl delivered. Disney wasn't open yesterday so we it skied it fresh with no people till about 11 am. Did 1 run on Lincoln, got 58 up high, about 8 sweet turns, but the bottom was hammered. So, went back and skied Disney till noon and took off. Not as fun as Alpine yesterday, but still the second best day of my year.

Bad news for AM skiers--they are trying to install an ATT cell signal booster. There goes the no reception excuse when the boss or the spouse tries to reach you.

^^^I used to only be able to ski resorts / locations that had cell reception, as I needed to be able to respond to calls quickly when they very rarely came it. Always worth it to be able to score most of the better pow days of a season. When we actually used to have plenty of powder days in a season. I'd be happy to see the Verizon service improve at KW. Barely can txt on a Saturday due to too much traffic.

    is that Relay?^^^
I'm heading out that way tomorrow on my split. The avy report kind of concerns me but I'll be conservative as I'm probably gonna be solo: http://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/advisory#null

Made the mistake of going to AM instead of squaw today. Oops. Had visions of Beaver/Estelle first thing but they never opened when I was there

Uuugh, just looked at the forecasts. Looks like this season is done. I really don't think March can salvage much. Gonna be driving to Shasta a lot!
