So even after hearing conditions had gone to crap near Mt. Rose we still decided to go up to Relay Peak. On the way we found some nice low angle quasi wind effected pow, bullet proof and some great snow that would have yielded 1 or 2 great turns on the down. From the false summit of Relay Incline lake peak looked tracked out. We topped out on Relay and decided to not drop North bowl after looking around and feeling the snow and seeing these

They look a day or so old I think. The sun softened some south facing open areas and made a fun decent around noon but my skis clearly told me that it was still low tide. The low angle trees from the way up still yielded the best turns of the day like ClimberEvan said in a previous post.

    KT??

Did Squaw open KT as planned?

We should be at Squaw tomorrow, and wondering what conditions might be?

At KW on Sunday it was easy to get misled into trying something that turned out to be No Fun...
(found some fun stuff out towards Palisades & 1 man/2man/saddle area)
But that's neither here nor there.
So Squaw...stay on the groomers or just stay on your game?

KT has been open at Squaw for a couple days. Pretty bulletproof most places. West face was scary at the top, but good turns midway down. Sun bowl traverse was icy enough that I couldn't stay on it, but there was soft snow in the gully halfway out. Red dog ridge and Oly Lady were not as good as they were earlier in the week, but still interesting. Sharpen your edges!

Castle Peak area was hammered by the winds the past couple days. Wind scoured in places even on the other side of the ridge from the swirling winds but good turns were found amongst the trees.

Anyone else scraping around at Gnarthstar today? I'm scraping around on skis banging out laps today. White helmet w/ Die Living sticker and either Prophet 100's or Nordica Enforcers, say hello if you want to hear about how good the Utah blower is right now.

I suspect those deeper tracks (some of which appear to be mine and sierraskier's) are from last weekend. I think the light snow we received mostly blew away from those aspects before they could be skied, leaving the crusty, fossilized remains of earlier turns. (I could be wrong .) That slide is new though. Interesting that it went to the ground.

I did a dork tour from my house to Rose summit parking area and saw evidence of earlier slides on northern aspects. It was kind of weird. That said, I don't think the avy danger is high right now. You might find a thin wind crust here and there though. Anyhow, the skinning is good, the skiing is mostly crap.

Well call me am illiterate JONG, but after spending an hour in various lines today, I learned that you can use last season's Epic/Tahoe local pass and don't need to check in for any reason.

Doh. Total resort shitshow at the Gnar of the North today, no surprise.

Anyone venture out beyond Fawn ridge or ThunderBowl/Spur at Kirkwood lately? Thinking about headed up there on Sunday. I know its been cold and ridiculously windy so any beta would be most helpful. Cheers!

sounds like just getting there could be the scary part. 10 is closed due to slide for life conditions (presumbly anyway, just listed as snow conditions).

I think whatever the avy danger is in the BC it is safer than groomers at Heavenly. Divegirl and I were there yesterday (if only Kirkwood had daycare my life would improve drastically) and it was a total shit show. One of the only times I actually felt scared for my safety skiing a groomer. Patrol carting people off the mountain everywhere. We were riding up Tamarack and one guy went head first into a tree. We didn't see it happen but the boarders we were riding the chair with did. He wasn't moving and got heli'd out. Hopefully he survived.

You know things are looking bad when I'm asking this, but... how were the groomers at Gnarstar? Soft and edgeable or scratchy with ice chunks rolling around? At this point the forecast is so bleak I'm contemplating some mid-week groomer zooming just to keep my legs in shape and work out a few boot / liner issues. No way I'm going near any resort on the weekends.

Still good chalk and packed pow off piste, but you need to ski between patches of scalped crust to get it. Groomers are skier fluff on firm crust but totally skiable - think Volkl Mantra. I'm testing out my Prophet 100 rock skis today and they work, but I would much rather be on my double layer titanium sharp edged Nordicas. I think you'll have plenty of fun midweek!

Edit: I would also describe conditions as "sporty, but still fun." These Prophets are hating life on patches of boilerplate ...,

The off piste I've skied the last few days has been reasonably edgeable. The problem has been more how rough and choppy the surface is. Just not a lot of fun. The West Gully on Sherwood was interesting--a smooth very narrow band of blown in soft snow, smooth icy banks, rocks weren't bad. That was when it was still blowing--conditions might be different now.

Heh, if you want to get a lot of weird looks and questions on a chairlift, roll into Northstar with this setup:

Sherwood was corny goodness today. Looks like more of it tomorrow given the forecast. Rocks are definitely starting to show over there. It was a good day, but man I hate Springuary.

Sherwood Cliffs, Deer Camp, and Counterweight Gully areas remain chalky in spots and has started to soften up a little bit. Didn't bother with High Yellow Gully though, figured that is scraped to hell.

I like to hate on Norf Shore, but I have to put in a shout-out for Kevin at New Moon Natural Foods store in Truckee:
That dude has excellent taste in beer and buys some pretty hard to find beer, such as ...
    Commons (from Portland)
    Cismontane
    Knee Deep
    Crooked Stave (from CO)
    Almanac (San Jose)

Good place for you spendy types who like to nerd out on beer.

Okay, I'll shut up with the beer stoke ... you know conditions are meager when we are talking about rocky corn runs and beer stoke in early Jan.

Have not been OB past few days, but westerly aspects are skiing well. It looks thin out toward Cali chute, but not terribly. Corner Chute had soft wind deposited snow from te ridge all te way to the groomer in the corral. I'd assume similar aspects might be doing well. Spur I would assume is close to bullet, but the broadway entrance into thunder might have decent snow. Avy bowl (which I now know is the glove rock bowl) I'd assume would also be okay with wind deposited snow.

If someone is out and about in Reno tomorrow. I need someone to pick up a wheel from Airport Auto Wrecking by the airport. I can pick it up from you Sunday anywhere within a reasonable distance from 395. 6 pack of Mammoth Brew Co or throw you some cash.

Hang on, is that a... mono-snow-split-board?

Knee Deep brewing out of Auburn - a bit on the heavy side with some of their beers (and I love me some hops), but not bad. I have yet to try the triple IPA @ 11.25% ABV (and 131 IBU - which is nuts).

Careful to support stores which don't give a crap about supporting their employees. Bring your goods with, NM is smoke and mirrors.
