Fun times at Kirkwood today. Yup, it was wet and drizzly. Yup, off piste the snow was a mostly super saturated and manky mess. But it was my first day of the season, and first days are always fun! Plus, the weather kept the crowds down so thumbs up for that.

Funnest turns of the day were below Notch Chute where the snow was least crappy. Also got some fun, lightly tracked turns in Eagle Bowl, but the snow down there was damn heavy. Overall, my sorta new Praxis GPO’s and brand new Mobe's performed amazingly well in the crappy conditions. Hellz yeah!

    Pray for snow mo fos.

Yeah those reports from Luther sound spot on with what we found on sat. Pretty good top half, pretty meh below but surprisingly didn't hit many rocks given how lumpy it is. Had visions of bluebird sunrise pow in the high alpine of cp today but those hopes were slightly diminished when I stepped out of my house at 6am and got dripped on from melting snow on the roof. Went for,it anyway hoping elevation would help the cause so we dropped the shuttle car n started skinning in the drizzle at 8.5k. After stepping over and through many discouraging runnels and even less encouraging mank even on high north and completely soaked clothes, we pulled the plug at 9.2k and retreated tails between our drenched legs.
Headed to calirado tomoro where I hear the snow is less drinkable then the current tahoe variety. Was a lil disturbed about leaving tahoe after a good storm and good skiing but now........not so much.

I had fun skiing today. Skiing the tops of soft bumps is fun, the bottoms had occasional rocks. The groomers were slarv-a-licious.

I'm surprised you got wet at all, as I noticed this protective dome over the peak you were most likely on top of yesterday,

Just a quick note to thank the collective for thier input a few pages back. Had a nice day at boreal 12/10 (only thing else open I could get to was squaw couldn't justify extra $). Boreal-San Fran airport easy 4hrs tops. If I'da known/thought to ask I'd avoid downtown on the rerun, the wait for the Oakland bay bridge toll was a bitch (6:30 PM-ish.)

    cheers! MT

I had a blast lapping Cornice Chair at Kirkwood on Saturday...absolute ideal snow for hucking and it was sticking to everything. I was completely soaked by 1pm but still...it was pretty damn fun.

Ideal for hucking and straight lines. And pillows even. I hit one of my favorite features in wagon wheel and was able to make the three drop hit mostly because the mank slowed me down enough to keep some poise. Loved it. Although, I would have much preferred a lighter substrate.

Hoping for a Christmas miracle right now.

I must disagree with this. The really low elevation stuff is OK at best (if you like mud), but go up at all and you'll find more snow than I prefer to ride on. YMMV, of course.

if you need any more evidence of how this winter has favored the crest over points east.
    kirkwood - 100% open. 2,300 of 2,300 acres
    heavenly - .08% open. 68 of 4,800 acres (edit-ooops, that should be 1.4%)

    holy crap.

Uh, check your math. (14% still is pretty sad).
