I'll be up tonight building a sled run and what looks like riding chair 1. Was hoping to get enough to get TC open, but 13" does not sound like enough.

I think they need to change the hashtag from #hellastorm to #blueballsstorm - got us all worked up and then said she had a headache and went to bed.

16" up top at Alpine and Squaw, at least, but sucks that it never really made it across the lake and it all went south. At least there's going to be cold temps and snow on and off for the next several days - they can start making more around the base areas.

Vailwood is reporting 13" - it's something at least.

    Spot on.

I can't remember two monster storms in a row being so weird (EDIT) to start the season. Last week's, with big rain at Kirkwood and snow at Northstar to start because of the strong inversion, and totally slaying Mt. Rose. And then this monster storm with too much southern flow, and nada on the east side of the basin. Coastal areas got 7-8 inches of water, and anything shaded by the crest pretty much nada. Ah well, at least the storm door is open, good cold temps to follow, and no facking RRR.

The sad reality is that most of the time, with the exception of true white-out conditions, Caltrans doesn't close roads initially because the weather makes them undriveable -- it closes roads so that it can clear accidents.

Those accidents typically involve BAMFs who think that because their vehicle has AWD, the laws of physics do not apply to them. Specifically, the laws of physics that involve inertia in a slippery environment, and/or centripetal force.

Once Caltrans closes the road to clear accidents, however, weather can play a major role in keeping it closed. Without cars driving on the road, snow builds up much more quickly. So even once they've gotten the accidents cleared, they may not be able to open the road for a while.

Economists call this a collective action problem.

Fun for what it is at squaw, but it ain't much. Maybe 6" at mid-mountain/Shirley. Sibo just popped but I haven't hit it yet.

Drove over last night around 10pm. Fluffy snow at 5k on the west slope, rain at 6.5k east of Donner Summit. Seems the cold air had trouble pushing over the crest too.

    Bummer.

    South Lake Tahoe Ski Lease

    Hello TGR!
I have organized a South Lake Tahoe ski lease for the past ten years - we have a great group of folks this year, but a few open spots we're looking to fill with Bay Area skiers/boarders.

Ski lease runs Jan 2nd through the end of April, and will cost $800 / person (+/- a little depending on bills and guest fees)

The house we have is awesome, in South Lake Tahoe close to Ski Run blvd, 5 minutes from Heavenly, and 40 minutes from Kirkwood. House has 4 bedrooms, a nice living room, big kitchen and dining area, garage, backyard with a hot tub, and plenty of space and other amenities. Sleeps 8 comfortably, and we're looking for a total of 10-12 people in the lease. We currently have 8, and just want a few more folks to keep the price down for everyone.

Lease members are welcome to use the house at any time during the season. Guests are welcome, but do need to pay a guest fee, which helps offset some of the expenses. House is fully furnished and well stocked, including a nice washer/dryer and a fire place for drying out wet snow clothes.

The group we have now are all Bay Area professionals, skiers and boarders both, who like to ski/board together, socialize and have fun together, share making dinners, relax in the hot tub, or go out to the casinos or bars in the area. I think we all have the Tahoe local pass, and visit Heavenly or Kirkwood as the day warrants.

I realize its a bit late in the season to be posting this, but I'm hoping to find 2-3 more people to fill in the last few spots in our lease. Please contact me if you are interested, or if you have any questions or what to know more about our lease!

    Mike

Kirkwood was good. Six fired at 12:45. Pretty deep. Rock Garden was skiable. Perfect snow for grooming. Cold temps tonight should dry it out. 10 was getting bombed.

Very fun indeed. The first couple of runs were untracked goodness. It felt great to surf some powder!

Nice deep pow all the way up Andesite peak near Castle today. I guess it snowed a lot after the wind dropped.

    Back to the snow.
Sensitive much? Actually, he was pretty accurate. Standard sop for a school administrator that needs to expect widespread teacher absence and not enough subs available to cancel everything. Not a big secret or a conspiracy theory.

Stellar day at the wood. Greatly exceeded expectations. And only 4 dozen skiers on the hill. Maybe 5.

    Back to the snow.
    Step 1: smoke crack.
Step 2: post on the internet

Wait, no, I think that should be the other way around... I'm not sure where the "teacher hatred" part of this comes in, as my comment was more expressing sympathy for the teachers who would have to deal with kids kept indoors all day, but I guess you can go back to your "snow" now...
