Hit up my quick-fix spot off of Hwy 431 yesterday.
Of note is that the Tahoe Meadows staging area is now open (the gate is open and you can drive down and park by the bathrooms/visitor center).

I got there about noon. Weather was severely overcast and it actually started to lightly snow while I was skinning out to the pitch.

Conditions were quite different than when I'd been there 2 weeks ago: snow was sparser despite the weather and casual refresh bouts we've had over the past several days. The snow I skied was basically micro-bead speed slurpee. I scraped off and exposed granite and dirt on a few turns, too.

Would have stayed out longer, but thunder kicked in around 12:30 and lightning started about 1.

Still skiable in/around that area, but it's starting to get bare, plus I'd be wary of really steep pitches as what's been falling has been pretty wet and comprised of micro-beads/ball bearings.

That is quite different from two weeks ago. Cause then light was still faster than sound.

Tallac was just poking through the clouds with a fresh coat on it. Wish I was seeing this in November rather than late May but a nice sight regardless. Sorry no crappy phone pic.

I think that the official start of the 2015/16 season should be when I'm cleared to ski post-ACL reconstruction.

Well, it'll be my official start, anyway.

    (FWIW, so far so good.)

Tamarack skied pretty decent Sun and Mon. Getting in and out is a bit of a chore as the skin track doesn't go all the way. The top is good for some fast slurpy turns, watch the wet slides.

Rose proper is holding on the south side, which is quite unusual for this time of year.

Kit Carson still has the man made base, which actually made for good, firmish, corn turns on Mon. Quite a noticeable difference from the natural snow which was pretty poopy. Could still ski the whole run on Mon, won't last with the warm up this week though.

Cool terrain near Round Top, looked like some fun chutes. Rolling solo and the snow seemed rather saturated on Monday so I didn't ski anything exposed, just from above the saddle. Started skinning from a couple switch backs after the old mine. A few photos to show coverage.

    Skied this today (5/27).
Westish of Pole Creek off Hwy 89.

Conditions were not-quite-corn/sloppy joe/day old whipped cream cheese.

Not sure of the name of the peak, but I could see Squaw off the backside and I was more or less directly across from the backside of Northstar the other way.

I got up there around 12:30. A white pick-up passed me going down on my way up. They had bikes in the back. Probably them, no? You might wish to remind your buddy about proper 4x4 etiquette: the uphill traffic has the right of way.

I wonder if they jumped the gap on the "Patch Below The Patches". There was a patch above the road and one below and somebody had built a mini-kicker (but it looked several days old). That woulda been a sick shot. Though the one you posted is pretty slick, too.

There were also a couple of high school kids camped up there. But they didn't have a car or bikes or motorcycles, so I'm wondering if they either hiked in or if their parents dropped them off for a few days. They had snow skates.

Still lottsa snow at the top of Forestdale Divide, plus the left patch is still technically connected to the middle patch, and there's some nice tree skiing to the looker's left of the left patch, as well.

This was the longest stretch of the middle patch that I've ever skied, too (took me 35 minutes to boot-pack it). Snow was corny at the top, but turned kinda gloppy towards the bottom.

Would have been a black truck, with one bike and one snow boarder in it. The features were built last weekend as there was a patch party happening.

pretty sure it was a white truck with three bikes in the back. but then i was more focused on having to slow down and stop to let them pass and then regaining my uphill momentum.

i always miss those patch parties, too. Oh well. Something to be said about being up there when there isn't a crowd of people.

i would have liked to have seen somebody gap the road, though. i was solo and too chickenshit to do it without a spotter.

thanks for the link to your buddy's site: will have to check out some of their films. Plus this whole fat bike thing might get me into mt. biking (that said, i'd be scared-as-f@#k to ride down that middle patch from the top).

I think they just worked the lower features yesterday

His fat bike movie should be out this fall, call "Off The Beaten Path" I rode stuff up there this winter that had me crapping my pants a bit, not a big deal on skis but on two wheels...

Here is a shot of me from that zone a few month's ago.

Thanks Dooks. I'm not much of a patch skier, but it's interesting to see what's out there in a drought year just for curiosity's sake.

    word.
that's why i took the pix, as i was surprised as to what's still out there, plus needed to take stock of what I will be able to feasibly ski in the coming weeks/months.

i snapped a shot of another peak that's Northeast of Basin, sandwhiched in between Independence Peak (or whatever the peak above Independence Lake is called) and Mt. Lola.
Need to look at a topo to find out what peak it is, but it had a nice ridgeline of snow.

here's a panarama which includes Castle Peak (far right), Basin Peak (in the middle), and the other peak (prominant left). Keep in mind this shot is taken more or less Northeast of all of them:
