How it snows all over Tahoe, rains in SC, and we don't get a drop in the north bay I don't understand. Damn - the mtb trails could really have used it. It's going to be September dusty by the end of May. And a lot of the natural trail resets we get from a normal winter didn't happen for two straight seasons so sections that were once passable at high speeds are now technical as shit. Which is fine, but it messes with your expectations based on years of knowing a trail. The lack of snow-pack is almost less of a shock to my system in some ways.

Looks like Carson pass got around a foot, Even the Heavenly and Echo Snotels are showing around 10 inches of fresh.

Yellow Jacket, Beehive, Hornets Nest or Nightmare/Miller Time all 'go'. The entrances are sketch (from below, Beehive seemed the least sketch). Getting out isn't too hard.

But yeah, I'd wait a few days for the hidden rocks to come back out. The snow was the most hollow/punchy knee wrenching crap I've ever skied last Sunday so the cold should help. This weekend may be ok up there.

Friend of mine who was a commercial fisherman in the Bay Area for decades and before that worked on the GG Bridge used to say there is always a storm in May. And he's been right. Too bad no storms in January. (He was the first to drive over the bridge--about 2 weeks before it opened he and his friends got drunk in Sausalito and drove across the bridge putting planks down over the sections that hadn't been finished. He did throw a dime in the toll basket.)

This was a nice little hike and camp. We actually hiked beyond Five Lakes to the Whiskey Creek area. There were a ton of hikers between Alpine and Five Lakes, but we didn't run into a soul between Five Lakes and Whiskey Creek. Anyhow, for anybody interested, the Whiskey Creek hike is a good one with youngsters. It's about 4-5 miles each way with about 1,000' of climbing. There are loads of water sources, and the Whiskey Creek area is loaded with great places to pitch a tent.

Excellent! Glad that worked out. I was wondering if that precip last week was gonna be a problem, but looks like it didn't do much except improve the trail conditions. Win!

He died some years ago in his 90's. He was one of the last 5 bridge crew alive when they celebrated the 50th anniversary. He was the subject of a Charles Kuralt "On the Road" piece on TV. (I realize I have to explain to most of you what TV is; I don't expect anyone to know who Charles Kuralt was.) Lived on a bluff in a beautiful redwood house overlooking Stinson Beach. He was always glad to see my wife (or any other woman); he tolerated me.

Just cuz I'm not an OG mofo like you, doesn't mean I don't know who Charles Kuralt was.

Buddy sounds like a cool dude.

His name was Frenchy Gales (don't know what his real first name was). He was on top of one of the bridge towers in an earthquake. Said the tower moved back and forth 40 feet. "There were two kinds of guys--them that was pukin' and them that was prayin.' A lot of guys didn't show up the next day but it was the height of the depression, and he came back--and the same thing happened again. And he kept coming back to work.
He rented a little trailer to my cousin who would go there when she needed to get away from her husband at the time. One day the husband showed up at the trailer with another woman. Frenchy ran them off with a shotgun. He liked to hunt; always had a German shorthair. Sorry for the reminiscing--feeling nostalgic.

    Incline snow report:

(Photos of a friend's place and my place.)

We've now gotten twice as much snow in the first half of May than we did in all of January.

    Which is your elevation?

Anyone up for a Saturday morning mission to Sonora on Memorial Day Weekend? Debating whether my season is done or still going...

We could afford to live in the place where we'd have to shovel 2-3x as much snow, not the place with the sweet lake view.

Potentially interested in Sonora Pass depending on conditions. It was burnt out two weeks ago.

Sonora on Tuesday...with the last few days of snow and the cool temps in the forecast, I'd say it should be pretty doable/skinnable through next weekend. After that, you may be walking on dirt for access to the higher terrain.

Incline village. Where the millionaire's go to play with the billionaire's.

Mammoth didn't get the 12 inches predicted. Touchy skiing and free base grinds

Mt Rose (resort) had 5-6" or so with big winds blowing it about. Not as much a I expected given the torrential downpours in Reno last night.

Good thing I did a recon hike on Wed and knew where the base was (Pretty much jetta & KC bowl...yay!). Saw a couple folks hiking to the northwest zone...I wonder how that went down since it was all dirt 2 days ago.

Lots of smiles at Rose today. It was a great day to slide skins in hot pow but pretty thin.

Anyone been up of Carson Pass lately? The web shows Woods Lake road open but curious on coverage of Moon and The Sisters. Basically, trying to decide whether to go on Sunday or go somewhere else. I'm thinking Sonora may still be the better call this weekend and leave The Sisters for some early June end of season hot laps.

Holler at Vets. He was up schussing "The Nipple" this past Sunday. Be willing to bet he did some extra beta on the surrounding area for future reference.
