even in the same format, music can be encoded at different bit rates. 64kbps mp3 is borderline quality, i think 128 is considered cd quality. I usually encode mp3's at 192.
and then of course, some songs are longer than others. i only have about 900 on my 5GB creative zen micro, but that includes a couple miles davis albums and a bunch of pink floyd. 13 min songs take more room than 3 min songs.
